from what I recall, there's an adjustment ****...it's a ring around the outside of the either the volume?

For a cheap audio upgrade, turn it off, (all the way down) , via the control behind the main volume. It simplifies the signal path, resulting in less distortion.
It's an ok feature, but not for any hi fi goals. As for the question, unless a wire is broken my repair skill is topped out. My sound receptor is covered by my drink holder anyway, and I am not that busted up about it.
