Default thinking about a cam

since my brother has cammed his 02 z28 Camaro with the 228r with 114 lsa cam it has me wanting to cam my z06,
I am thinking about going with the same cam set up that he went with but not sure that is exactly what I want to go with I will be installing the cam my self, any thoughts would help me go with a different cam?

The cam ARUN has he calls it , his stage 3 cam. Making great power and sounds great also. Rick has it in his motor with a ysi on the stock motor making almost 1,k rwhp with it.

I just had a cam installed a few months ago along with intake manifold, long tubes, and other goodies. I now have it back in the shop because the harmonic balancer is shot. Another $350 I had to pay for getting it installed. All together its costing me right at $1000 for everything. If I would have known that this was a common issue with these engines I would have replaced it while getting the cam installed. Not sure what condition your balancer is in but I would definitely think about it while everything is out.

I had a 224 in my old camaro and I loved it. 228r would be what I would go with if I wanted to cam my z06 but it really depends what your purpose for the car is.

I have the 228R in my Z with 112LSA. I'm not a big supporter of the 114 duration.

If doing the cam, then get a new harmonic balancer pinned just in case you decide to FI it later on. Search "Pinning the balancer" for info.

thanks every one for the feedback and to be honest I did not even think about replacing the balancer at all..but now that I read this I have 45k on her now, so it won't hurt to replace it while i am in there any ways..and yeah i agree with rik on this one i might as well pin it too while i am in there

Installed GM "hot cam" a while ago and love the power curve and idle.
Also installed SLP catted long tubes, Z06 intake, new balancer, updated oil pump, chain, valve seals, pushrods, etc. Don't know how you could do that for $1,000 though. Think I was around $2,200 plus the tune from East Coast Supercharging.

Another suggestion would be to call about a cam for FI if you plan on going for more HP later. No need to buy a big cam which might work against you if you want to have the best performing set-up.

You must keep your end game in sight and try to build it the way you really want it.

Know what will be your dream car and do it in stages if you can't do it all at once. Enjoy the progress as you go along.

I did the cam upgrade back in the 70's on my 69 SS Camaro. Sent a few push rods right through the rocker arms and ate a number or rods bearings. Then I read here about amateur Corvette mechanics doing mods (improvements?) on a limited budget, do half the job and end up needing new long blocks or transmissions. I think about my cam a lot also. I think how nice it works and what a good job the GM designers did with my C5 motor. It ain't broke yet so I don't fix it.

if someone breaks their motor from simply installing a cam and supporting upgrades.... they are doing something wrong...

My buddies & I installed a 228, 230, 580, 581, 113 LSA Comp Cam in my 2000 LS1 coupe along with TPIS hardened push rods, Patriot Gold springs and retainers, LS2 timing chain . Already had LT headers, VRB2, catback, etc.

After the tune I could not believe the diff. Your Z started with more power than mine. Go for it but don't cut corners, do it right.
