Intermittent starter
Hello everyone.
I recently had a new Bosch starter installed on my 2000 and it's been trouble-free up until now. After only three months since the repair, I experienced the familiar clicking sound that the starter solenoid makes when it goes bad.
We push-started the car and got it up to the mechanic who performed the replacement. When he tried it, it started more than a dozen times without a miss.
Knowing the history of C5s having certain ground problems, could this be an intermittent ground and not a defective starter? (P.S. It's not the battery.)

Could absolutely be a ground. It could also be the solenoid or it could be the ignition switch itself. Gonna require some snooping on your part to find out which one is the culprit. Bill Curlee is the resident expert on this matter (I think) but we have a ton of great advisors on this site. I'm sure a few of them will chip in here. Good luck and let us know know it turns out...

Yeah, I think that's what we're going to concentrate on: the grounding. When my mechanic tried starting it, he said it started OK and he tried it several times in succession and it never failed. It's the intermittent nature of the thing that's driving us crazy.

there's a starter relay under the hood, position 42?
you also have the solenoid and also have the ignition switch
i had the same thing happen when i bought mine. replaced the starter, the relay and the clutch switch. haven't had a problem since and have no idea which of the 3 was my issue
