You were a great grandfather trying to do the nice thing and you got burned. I'm glad he didn't get hurt and I pray that he learned something. I'm sure grandpa did. I hope all can be made right between you and the family and grandson changes his ways. Best of luck.
Hey Grandpa. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
When I was 16, a friend of mine, who's mother was very wealthy, got a new 911 shortly after his 16th birthday. He was dead in three days. I had the means to buy my boys nice cars when they were 16, however, I learned early on "just because you can doesn't mean you should". Handing a young kid a Vette is like handing them a loaded weapon.
Just putting it out there that I got my vette at 17 and treat it with more respect than guys twice my age. One's mental maturity should be taken into account before judging someone purely on age.

I'm glad you had the care and intellect to treat your car with care, but I'm afraid you're the exception, not the rule.
Its funny to me that a lot of the "baby boomer" generation simultaniously complains that kids these days are spoiled, and then buys their grandson a corvette
No --- Been driving them since my first car, Oh and no wrecks.
Sorry your sour grapes don't work. It was just bad luck for him
is all, could have been any type of car.
Just too bad some have to start out in a beater. But when something
happens those whiners love to chime in that had to do with a first
car being nice LOL LOL
You might better spend your money and send him to a high performance driving school(bike or car) first. They would teach him to respect speed and power. Glad to hear he is OK. Bat Pig out.
Amen.

It's good that he is uninjured but possibly he might grow to appreciate the value of things, and other peoples property, if he has to pay for them, and for the results of his actions.
Here's a thought; put him to WORK (REAL work, no play work for relatives) and have him use HIS money to buy things. He may be more careful if he knows that Granddaddy isn't going to buy him other stuff/replace things.
With the price of C-5s dropping and younger (less mature) people owning them we're likely going to see more and more of these type stories. This is the second I've read this morning about someone losing control and wrecking (both are about new owners).
Well I got my Vette at 18 and by the time I was 20 it was making 600rwhp and was a completely different car to drive. The blanket statements about young people and vettes being like giving them a "loaded gun" is pure ignorance. It is not the young person with a vette but rather which young person.
And if you were wondering by 24 I should have a 900+ rwhp vette. Currently collecting parts for a built engine. Keep in mind I am responsible and respect the car for what it is.
So without knowing the kid I ll say that I am sorry to hear this and I hope he learnt a lesson from it.

Hopefully we all know the difference between age and maturity.
