lets assume that it is Just a faulty O2 sensor, no real problem there. while riding around with the check engine light on something more critical to longevity of the vehicle goes bad. since the check engine light was already illuminated you would never know. the code for the o2 sensor should tell bank 1 or bank 2. if you dont want to buy new sensors you may want to remove them and clean them with carb cleaner and reinstall.

You can drive with the "check engine" light on, until the "fix engine" light comes on if you choose.

I'd sooner just fix the problem than drive around with that warning message in my face. A tank of gas up here is more than the price of an $80 O2 sensor so I don't see a big deal.

front o2 sensors are $20 something each for a quality denso sensor via rock auto. they take all of a couple minutes to screw in

say $50 shipped and 30 minutes to jack the car up, use a 7/8 wrench and screw them in

the code will be specific to what failed. 9 times out of 10 it's the front.

hell if you're REALLY cheap i'll send you a single working oem front for shipping

People that own/drive a Vette and are too cheap, dumb or lazy to spend a few bucks to keep them running right amaze me.

A few years back, after tracking my Vette, The CEL came on. I think it was an overheated O2 sensor. Once it cooled down and I quit pushing the car the CEL went off on it's own. It was like the next day or so.

I read somewhere, can't remember where, that if the code didn't come back, it would clear itself after so many ignition cycles. Which it appears to have done. Hasn't happened since.

The Code will tell you which O2 sensor it is, then just replace it - even a grade schooler can do that -

Just do it and stop being scared!

Thanks,Matt

You're 55 Chevy was designed to get 20MPG on the highway, last maybe 5 years and 100,000 miles. The new cars with all their bells and whistles are somewhat different. Do you still run bias ply tires and drum brakes on your 55? There's more than one reason restomods are so popular. Think about it.

Hey Phanni, I wouldn't trade my "55" for three c-5 Corvettes. My old tired "55" is probably worth 45-50 thousand dollars easy. I'm not new to Corvettes either as I've owned 18 of them over the last 50 years of driving. I like Vettes but "shoebox Chevys rule!

These are not the 50K dollar sports cars they were when new. Now they are a decade old and can be bought on the cheap.

What's your point?
I'm not 25 years old anymore either, but I still let the pros help me keep running.

The issue with the CEL and a bad O2 sensor is that it can ruin your CAT if the O2 allows unburnt fuel in the CAT - then the big bucks come into play along with much more work on your end. And if your state has emission tests you are not going to get around that (as my state does). Reset the code and see if it returns, but don't ignore it for long.

also worse mpg and hard on the rings, you build up carbon in the chamber

most ecu's default to a fixed 10:1 AFR when the 02s are unresponsive. that's probably 10mpg, maybe 12

won't take long to pay for the o2s

Guy is saving what? A few dollars?? He'll spend more when other things start failing (and he spends more on FUEL). Just another person that has no clue. Cars can actually WARN you of impending issues, if your FOOL enough to IGNORE the warning, do so at you peril!
