Is it a good idea to install the lmc5 module and unlocker in my 03 ZO6? I never had a problem with the column lock. I only had one recall done for the steering wheel. The steering wheel still locks and unlocks normally. I'm leaning towards getting what I need and installing it. What has everyone else done?
Order & install it - don't even think about it!
A friend of mine maintains his '01 religiously including a battery tender when when not driving it and just got the column lock & message 2 weeks ago. Lucky for him the 'wait 10 seconds' worked out.
It's cheap insurance/peace of mind - just do it!

I had no problems and installed it just to be on the safe side

After getting the "column lock" a couple of times I bought it, and installed it about a month ago. If your column still locks make sure you buy the kit with unlocker and follow the instructions to a T.
Yes, get it.
My car was fine, but I installed the LMC5 anyway to prevent the problem before it ever had a chance to happen.
Can I get a clarification here. My car got the recall work done at the dealership a few years back. I believe they installed a harness and some other parts. Do I need to uninstall/remove any of these parts if I install the Lmc5?
Column Lock: The 1997-2000 A4s (automatics) and all M6's (manuals, with or without the factory recall done) have a dreaded column lock issue that if not resolved by the owner will most probably rear its head at some point. 2001 and later autos do *not* have the problem. The steering column will lock up and not unlock, rendering the car not able to be driven. One main cause of this is a bad or improper battery but it has occurred when that wasn't the cause as well. Beginning in 2001 model year, the automatics were changed and eliminated the problem. All the manuals have the problem.
There are two commonly accepted methods of really resolving the issue.
1) A Column Lock Bypass (CLB). Many forum vendors carry the part necessary to make a column lock problem a thing of the past. These include Corvettes of Houston, Mid-America Motorworks, etc.
Here is a thread with details on the Column Lock issue but it was written prior to the advent of the LMC5 device. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...ky-please.htmlThere are a lot of forum threads on the column lock issue. Using the search function should bring up a number of them for you to review and learn.

You should double check with Compliance Parts to be sure, but I believe you do not have to take out the previous recall trash that was installed by the dealer.
Basically I think the module fools the computer into thinking all is great, but during the install you actually disconnect the locking motor when it is in the open position.
Keep in mind that after the install, the steering wheel will not ever lock again when you turn the car off and remove the key.

I'd recommend you either install the LMC-5 or a column lock bypass that is available from many vendors. You may not have had any problems so far, but why take the chance.

Thanks for the info. Will call Compliance Parts to make sure. I will keep parts in car just in case until I decide to install it.
If you don't mind getting stranded by either a locked column or the 2mph fuel shutoff (you will eventually) when your not close to home, then DON't install one.
If my steering wheel does not lock with the key out, does that mean that the by-pass has been installed in my '03Z? I bought it used and my steering does not lock.
Thank you 8vette7, I tried it ad did hear the bzzzzz. Guess I'll go by Chevy later and try to get a GMVIS report. By the way which system is best? CLB or LMC5.
