The bar is designed to equalize the suspension load while cornering. Similar in concept to the 'torsion bars' Chrysler used back in the 50's.
According to Ralph Nader, if the early Corvair had a rear stabilizer bar it would not have had the tire decompression issues or the rollover tendency.

One way to learn what an "Anti-sway Bar" does, drive you stock vette, then replace your stock sway bar with a Z06 or after market thicker sway bar. Then drive your vette and you will learn real fast what they do, not to mention the smile that gets thrown on your face...
