Would picking up one be a wise investment in the long run, How many production run numbers. I assume the ones stating " Indianapolis Motor Speedway" on the door were the track used parade cars and how many of those exist?

A wise investment? No.
Buy one because you like it.
All PC had the 'Indy' stickers on them. You would need to do some research to see if the one you are looking at has any history with the actual race festivities. Documented race festivity history should add a little value to the car.
Mike98SilVert posted some good places to look.
Buying a Corvette as an investment is not the best move..
Buying a C5 is a good investment in comparison to buying a new econo-box or a used whatever. I always try to look at cars I can buy and use but still get a good resell value down the road. Case in point is my wife's 95 Impala SS. 194,000 miles and guys still ask if it's for sale when she stops for gas ect. JMHO

The pace cars do seem to hold their value a bit better than other C5s, but its not really a wise investment IMO. If you like the looks of the car and the features it offers, then get one. The '98 PC does seem to garner its share of attention, good and bad. Personally, I like the looks.
I like the fact that it is very unique a vette you don't see everyday, I think of it as something that was apart of a historical event. Granted they seem to be holding their value which is true. A pace car will always be worth more in the long run over the standard model
here is the difference I noticed between the pace cars

The asking price is usually a lot more then a non PC that is true. But I've seen the same car selling for loooooong periods of time with no offers. Not to say that they are not selling but the buyer pool for PC are quite a bit smaller than for a regular C5.
IMHO (and this is coming from a PC owner), I think the PC without the decals look horrid. I like the yellow wagons when the car is on the track as lots of NASCAR cars are more colorful than them but for the street... not so much!
