Who all has removed theirs, either with an aftermarket CAI or the OEM air box? I left mine in place when I installed the SLP Blackwing CAI but after reading the below from an article on the 2002 improvements, I am thinking I should have removed it.
With the mass air flow (MAF) sensor, GM did what Registry members have been doing for years–remove the air flow straightener or "screen". What took them so long to figure that one out? LS6 is not GM’s only application of that MAF. Any use of it with an intake duct that curves just before the MAF (typical of trucks), needs the straightener for the MAF to sense accurately and conventional wisdom was to leave it on Corvettes. In part, the essence of what Juriga and his engineers call "the ruthless pursuit of power" is whipping conventional wisdom.
With the Corvette’s relatively straight passage between the air filter box and the MAF, the straightener isn’t needed. Juriga told us it wasn’t until the MY02 development that his people questioned the MAF configuration in a Corvette-specific perspective. "
"The low-hanging fruit is gone as far as changes that make more power," he continued, "so you gotta start going higher. We get to one target and say, ‘Ok. now we’re set.’ Next year, we’ll have another target, so we question what we did before."
not going to gain much (1-2hp) i would think. the screen does give it slightly better drivability. I added a Halltech MAF screen to mine. With a CAI you will get lean codes that is fixxed by adding a screen, that is why i added one to mine.. i had a strange low speed surge that it also cleaned up. If you are wanting to remove it for "More Power" its a bit of a waste, If anything i would say get a Halltech screen, much bigger holes and still gives the better drivability. I think the C6's had a screen in them for that reason.

Just look at the pictures above. Even with the Halltech model, the screen looks like it obstructs ~15% of the cross-sectional area of the MAF. No wonder they nixed it in 2002. Case closed.
I say swap your MAF for a 02-04 model. If you get a lean code or driveability issues, then you have two options: 1) get an aftermarket tune, or 2) just put the original MAF back on. No big deal. And if you don't get a lean code or drivability issue, then you're gold.
I agree with the others. Leave it alone. If you really need that extra .0001 seconds at the drag strip or off your lap time, hit the John and take a bit fat dump before getting in the car. The weight reduction will do just as much and won't f*** with you tune.

I removed one on my 95 LT1, and ported it, and removed the whole cross piece inside. No issues. When I did H/C/I, the tuner was having issues, and asked if I had done anything to it, once he knew he was able to tune.

Untill you are putting down big numbers you are not maxxing out the maf.. which tells me on a stock car, stock cam, stock heads, stock intake manifold you are not "losing" power from the maf screen. but you are gaining accuracy in the MAF reading, better drivability and cleaner readings especially with a CAI.
Yes they removed it from the 02-04 but they also added it back in on the C6... Which tells you what? its there for a reason. If you get to the point of maxxing out the MAF then its time for a larger one. The older style LT1 maf was much different and had much less volume inside the housing which was a differnce compared to the LS style maf.
Leave it or get a Halltech if you really wanna feel better about the MAF screen.
Took mine off 12 years ago. Seemed to be the thing to do since chevy did it on the 02.Anyway,car runs great, never had an issue. But being that you cant immediately replace it should a problem arise, just leave it on.
