I don't care about stuff like HUD, but am more interested in the mechanical nature and issues of the car as I'll definitely be doing some track. As long as I can update/change the issues like those plastic bits on the suspension I'm cool with the 2001. It'll receive a new suspension anyway so really, I am not concerned.
I REALLY appreciate all the input and advice, guys.
The reason I started the thread was that there are a couple of really nice, really low mile 2001 Z06 cars locally. I just wanted some insight on whether they should be ruled in or ruled out and I now have that answer.
I'm sure I'll bug the crap out of you guys after I actually purchase a Z06... I'll need advice on what to add for enjoyment and for reliability on the track.
BTW -- I'm assuming LT stands for long tube headers?? This stuff is new to me.
01's had a slightly weaker clutch, but having an 03 up clutch isn't an improvement, it didn't last as much longer than the stock one. I'm running a Monster clutch now and RPM level V trans. Me? I'd look for upgrades over a bone stock one. My 01 has almost 80k miles. Still runs low 12's at 114-115 just like the day I bought it new in 2001.
Are you planning on modding it? If so, then why would it matter? I have an 01.. Heavily modified, added HUD myself. I personally wanted either the 01 ( first year) or the 04 (last year) C5Z.... No regrets on going w the 01...
I have an 01Z and have had it since 45k for 6years. LOVE IT. Now has 115k. The only MAJOR issue I had stock was I broke the stock pressure plate around 80k miles. Broke 2 fingers merging onto the interstate. I will say this....01's do consume oil. Mine does atleast. If you spend a lot of time around 4k+ rpms daily(racing) your probably gona have to add a quart or 2 in a 4k oil change interval. Mine is that bad. Funny thing is you don't every really see it smoke. As far as power goes....from 0 to 3k rpm there is no difference in power compared to 02-04 models. Beyond that range you can actually feel a harder pull. Nothing overly drastic, but noticeable. There are some differences in parts ie, sodium filled valves, intake design, end links(mentioned earlier), yellow valve springs (01's have blue springs) but the 20hp difference came from the slightly bigger cam. 01 I believe was .525 .525 116.5 LSA where as the 02-04 models have a .550 .551 117 LSA. Once you start to mod or swap cams, they become the same car. Happy hunting
Mine is 01 too ,absolutely blast to drive no issues except the CLB haven't been done to it I had the "pull the key wait 10sec " message came up the other day but that can be easily fixed for about $45...and you asked about the metal end links I think they like $37 a piece
Hey I have had the "pull the key" msg happen a couple of times the past two weeks. What is causing that and what fixes it?
I just had it fixed or shuld say prevented of locking me out somewhere I bought a LMC5 from ebay its by complianceautoparts took like 20 min .It was a great weather outside today to do it

That's the dreaded CL. For the life of me I don't know why GM thought it was a good idea to install an electronic column lock. There is a relay that powers that little lock bolt you hear when you insert/pull key. Well it is beyond known for those to go bad. When that happens, you will not be able to unlock your steering wheel. Either that or youll end up with the reduced engine power. Ask me how I know. Save yourself from being stranded and spend the $40-$50 bucks for the CLB. Do a search and you will find MULTIPLE threads on this very subject.

I did the LMC5 too, right after I brought the car home; the column no longer locks, ever. However, I have started getting the "Pull key, wait 10 seconds" alert on the DIC. As I said, I am pretty positive it can't do anything now since both the lock AND cutoff are disabled, but the message is annoying...

The original owner of my car had the column lock issue fixed at the local dealership. So that shouldn't be it now.
I researched before I bought my 01. Less power with the 01, but atleast you won't have to worry about breaking valve springs. I just bought a procharger for my car and haven't even put 1,000 miles on it the 6 months I've owned it lol

The 2001 Z06 did not have the valve spring issue? Is that confirmed?

They had a completely different spring that did not suffer from the failure rate as some of the later years. However, I had to replace mine around 60k miles as I was getting valve float at just 5500 RPM.
I have an 03 Z and a good friend has an 01. He has driven mine and commented it did have more power ( have a CAI and Fll catback system on my 03). His 01 is totally stock.
Both drive, ride, and handle great. Nothing wrong with an 01. Unless you track it, no real difference.
If you track it, might notice difference in upgrades to motor and suspension, but would be minor difference.
There's nothing wrong with the 01Z. I have one and loving every minute of it. No oil burning, ring issues, or anything else. When stock to stock against an 02 up, the performance between the two models are about even. Don't get hung up over that one model is better than the other BS.
