Default What's Wrong With 2001???

Why don't I see the love for the 2001 Z06?

I know it doesn't have the 405 rating and some might say first year of any model is an issue, but other than that -- why no LOVE?

I'm searching and seem to find great examples and some in such outstanding and low mileage condition I think it's crazy not to buy one.

BUT.... the sideways looks I get when I mention purchasing the '01 to sports car people is confusing.

School me on the 2001 and why or why not it's the car.

From what I know (which is limited) the 2001 Z has less appeal because:
1. It has 385 HP from the factory. 2002 and up have 405.
2. I believe the rear suspension has some plastic end links in it. 2002 and up have metal.
3. Some 2001's burn excess oil from a poor ring design. Some 2002's break valve springs, which can destroy an engine. Some 2003-2004's have a crossover pipe between the gas tanks that can crack and leak gas.
Take your pick of which problems you want.

Nothing wrong with 2001 I have had one since then. It has 129000 mile on it. End links can be replaced. Oil consumption not an issue, the way you drive can affect that as well. CAI , Headers and tune help them a lot.

Any more detail on this aspect of the '01?

- How much to replace the links?

What can be done to gain the 20 HP it lacks from a stock '02-'04?

Absolutely nothing wrong with an '01. It was a ground breaking car for its time and still one of the best bang for the buck bargains out there. From what I could tell when test drving an '01 at the same time I bought my '02 there was no SOP difference in performance.

Good news. I plan on driving one this coming weekend. They seem to be languishing around here just sitting week after week at a couple of local dealers. Actually, seems the C5 Z06 market in general is kinda soft right now. Why these awesome cars sit for weeks on end at dealers I'll never know...

The '01 had the standard cats like '02-'04 but also had a pup cat in front of both of those... Ditch the exhaust manifolds and get LT's with or without high flow cats and you're there probably past a stock '02-'04. Other than that I think it was a change in the cam that garnished more POWA for the newer models. Someone chime in if I am off or what else I am missing.

For me I wanted the first production year of the C5 Z06.

You can easily put one of these in the '01...

Have to agree with that too! It was between my QS and a white Z out of Texas when I was looking. Love the white Z's!

I put a HUD in my car but I wouldn't describe the process as easy.

The white '01 is a unicorn!
I have an '01 with 52k miles.
No broken springs or "leaky butt." The motor mmmay be a little thirsty but I go hard.
1 3/4" headers and x pipe package, CAI and a Dyno tune got me 386whp.
I know nothing about drag racing but managed a 12.5 @ 117 last weekend
I am proud to have an '01 and I think all the others do too

My 2001 has 42k miles and is nearly stock with only a SLP Blackwing CAI. I have driven my buddy's 2002 with a cam and I couldn't tell much difference. I have the 2004 shocks awaiting time to replace them to fix the rear end stiff suspension probs. Other than that I love the car and would highly recommend one. Would I like to say I have a 400hp car? Sure, but like others have said there is no SOTP felt difference. Get the color, miles and price you want and don't worry about the year. However if do buy a 2001 be sure the oil usage recall was corrected by a dealership.

Mine is 01 too ,absolutely blast to drive no issues except the CLB haven't been done to it I had the "pull the key wait 10sec " message came up the other day but that can be easily fixed for about $45...and you asked about the metal end links I think they like $37 a piece

love my 01z with 22k miles. Love it more than my old supra TT and more than my old 65 cobra replica.

If there is something wrong with the car, I haven't found it.

PS - IF you plan to do headers and a cam. no difference.

Just remember that the 63stingray was a unwanted child too. Now look who's the most wanted.

Not that that will happen with the Z, but the it could.

After 12 years of owing my 01, it's still a blast to drive, I fact I'm going to put another 500 miles on mine today.

I've had my '01 for about a month. I love it. I made the jump from owning Terminators (03/04 Cobras) and I'm very happy that I came over to "the darkside". I have had no issues thus far with my '01 Z. It has ~17k miles on it and I've put on roughly 1,500 over the past month. It is a blast to drive.

I have LTs, midpipe, catback, CAI and tune and I dyno'd at 377/369 on a superflow dyno (they read low). It pulls plenty hard. No problem barking the tires when I bang 3rd gear.
