I'm not getting any kind of replies from tech or general, so here goes...
I'm totally new to headers and I need some help! I have an opportunity to buy a set of ZO6 headers from a fellow forum member and it would be attached to a Corsa X-Pipe/Indy exhaust system. Can someone please help with the following questions??
1. How are the ZO6 headers different than stock C5 headers?
2. Are there any potential problems with using ZO6 headers in a C5?
3. Will the ZO6 headers cause the car to fail the smog test in California?
4. How will the headers change the exhaust note?
5. How long is the install and who would I take it to (ie. muffler shop)?
6. How much more HP can I expect from the ZO6 headers?
Any other hints or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!
If you live in CA and have to get your car emissions tested, headers are going to fail the car unless they have a CARB EO number.
If your car originally had the pre-cats, which long tube headers will force you to eliminate, your're a dead duck. If it didn't originally have pre-cats it might be arguable, but you will have a tough row to hoe.
Everything between the AFS and the last catalysts in the exhaust system are considered part of the emission control system, so any modification will automatically fail the car on visual inspection, even if it passes the tailpipe test, unless the parts have a CARB EO.
Beyond that, the many simulations I've run on the LS1 and LS6 engines show little to no significant improvement with headers because the OEM valve timing has very little effective overlap. Headers work in conjuction with overlap to scavenge the cylinders of exhaust gas and initiate inlet flow during the overlap period, and if there's very little overlap, headers don't do much good.
FNC80: I suggest you do a search on "Headers" in the Performance/Tech section to learn about headers.
Stock C5s do NOT have headers; they have heavy, cast iron exhaust manifolds. Headers replace these.
Any long tube header (the only ones worth adding) will have smog problems because it is not OEM, does not have a CARB cert. and because your pre or "pup" CATS will be eliminated when the headers are added.
The real question you should consider asking your self is, "what are my performance goals?" A good set of long tubes should be worth about 12hp on a stock C5. Is this consistent with the gain you expect? You may want a supercharger or heads and cam, etc. for more power.
Actually, I did do a search before I posted the question. The confusion comes from 1. my not undersanding the difference between a header and a manifold, and 2. a for sale ad selling ZO6 "headers" taken off a stock car.
