I am taking this time to get a little proactive on some of the notorious nickel and dime C-5 issues. One item in the "want" catagory is a new windshield. Mine has 2 repaired chips in it and as a whole it isn't the best feature of the car. Not horrid though, and I know if I wait long enough it will switch out as a comp claim. I dont care what they claim. After a while the fail and shoot across. The repair just delays it, plus the gal today said the industry wont allow over 3 chips before it becomes a safety issue.
In pursuing a replacement windshield for my work truck, I inquired about one for the Vette. There is over $450 difference in a replacement for a HUD car.
What happens if a person installs a windshield not designed for the HUD in a car that has an HUD. Will the HUD just not show up at all or be very dim and not readable. Not wanting to devalue the car, but the HUD is a feature I doubt if I would've paid extra for. It's cool but I doubt if I would miss it if it hadnt have been there.
I am in the same situation in wanting to replace windscreen with hud. My windscreen is pitted from gravel/rocks and is getting impossible to clean with a greasy film. If I am going thru insurance who cares on the cost just try to get the best install possible. If paying cash, well that is a different story. This saga will now resume next spring
From what I've read here previously, there is a small rectangular patch of reflective material between the laminated layers of safety glass in cars with heads up display - - - non HUD cars (in theory) don't have this feature and without it- the reflection from the dash should not be visible.
Here in AZ, windshields are sandblasted by the particulates in the air and reveal serious pitting after just a few years . . . I'd like to replace mine too - - -but am nagged by the fact that its original to the car and at this point, really doesn't bother me.
I installed HUD in my non-HUD equipped '98. It worked fine with the standard windshield and I didn't really notice a perceptible difference between it and my HUD equipped '01.
I have been convinced to save the $400+.
Though now I will probably wait until spring. Winter here in the midwest sometimes has a way with taking care of windhield issues on their own.
I peekd into some other car and glass industry sites and seems this is a common question. The consistant reply is the non-HUD glass will still show a display very effectively. The HUD glass has a film that only allows the reflection off the one pane of glass. The non-HUD glass lets both panes reflect causing a double image appearing to make the HUD look out of focus.
Sounds reasonable.
I have had 3 windshields replaced on my 2001. First time they replaced it with a non-hud glass by mistake and I drove the car about one block and turned around and had them reorder a replacement. It was like seeing-double, but you could still make it out - just not as sharp - enough where it would have driven me nuts. They replaced it with a Made in Mexico HUD glass and it was not much better. 3rd time I had them reorder the glass through the dealership and it worked perfect.
The next two times I had to replace the windshield I made sure they ordered the HUD glass through the dealership and no problems.
I have seen lots of people use regular glass - probably just like rolling the dice as to how well it will work?

This agrees with other feedback I have seen...You can see the image but it is not as sharp.
