Just passed the Maryland smog test this morning. .
Was wondering whether it would pass since this is the first time and I have a Vararam CAI. Previous owner lived in a MD county that does not require the test.
When you pull in, the inspector tells you to leave your motor running, to open your gas cap and asks for your mileage. He asks you cash or credit card for the $14. After he tells you to go sit in a small cubicle while he sits in the car. He makes sure there is no "check engine" light on and plugs in the tester. Takes about a minute. Then he takes the undercar mirror and checks the driver side. The computer screen shows that info has been sent and printer spits out test. Inspector comes back and tells you to come back in two years.
There were 5 cars in front of me when I arrived. Took about 30mn from arrival to time I left.
...quite a bit different from ours, which requires a full visual (Vararam would fail that one.), followed by a low-speed dyno-like test, whereas the drive wheels are positioned on rollers for a 15 and 25 MPH run.

Yup. More to the point, it includes an actual measurement of what's coming out the exhaust: it's not enough that the car's computer thinks everything is working (or can be tricked into believing it), it has to actually work.

in MD for cars 1977-1995 it's the idle tailpipe and gas cap test. For cars after that it's only the OBD test. (some MD counties with light traffic do not have smog test).
In my opinion it's a common sense approach somewhere in between no test and the California zealots.
Soon in California you will only have a few choices: Electric car, horseback riding or mass transit.
