Default California Question

I have a 2003 Z with 25000 mi. Calloway Honker, FAST manifold. Stock exhaust and heads. I am interested in installing a cam for a HP bump. Would like to put LT headers on, but I don't believe I would pass CA smog. I was told short tube headers would pass. My question is:

1. What would be a good cam and roughly how much hp increase?
2. Would short tube headers be worth it. Any HP increase there?

Your opinions are important to me. Thanks.

Dave

1) something around a 224 or a 228 (duration), roughly 50-75hp
2) no the Z manifolds flow almost as well as a pair of shorty's.

We have full turn key camshaft packages (even includes the Dexcool and oil) installed for $2,000

We like to custom spec our camshafts for each individual customers application

Have you passed smog with the honker CAI installed? I called Calloway, and they told me that the CARB# doesn't apply to Z06 models. I was hoping to install the honker also, but held off because of smog fears.

You can find info on CARB legal equipment at the following website:

We keep stock air boxes and other stock Smog stuff in our storage for our customers that need to "switch back" for the testing.

confirmed my suspicion.....

it only pertains to the 2001 LS6.

i've had my Honker on since '07 (2002 Z06) and have never had a smog station question it or ask for the sticker, so....gonna keep my fingers crossed

FYI - it is possible to find some smog shops in CA that don't look at the goodies, but just do the actual smog test...as it should be. I had one when I lived down there.

Last I heard they are supposed to move to reading codes only on OBD2 cars starting next year, don't know if that is still true. Thats what they do up here in WA.

Alternative option to LT headers are LS7 Exhaust manifolds/cat pipes. will need a tune.. they are OEM parts so you will have OEM numbers to read.. i have them on my car and gained simmilar HP numbers as LT headers but lower TQ numbers. I added the AIR injection to my LS7 manifolds but you can remove them and tune out the codes if you dont want the AIR system. OR add dummy flanges to the manifold to make it look factory. search my posts you will find what i did and others have done. they are MUCH better then shorty headers and stealthy because they are GM parts.

LS7 exhaust H-Pipe will also need to be adapted to the mufflers with a reducer, the H-pipe is 3" rather then 2.5" like stock.

RedZ….the LS7 stock headers are an interesting alternative. I will research it further, thanks. John8642….yes, I have passed with no problem before at Smog and Go. Understand, I sanded off the FAST logo and repainted the manifold black like the OEM manifold. They never questioned it.

Default Need a good shop

I'm looking for a good shop to do some work on my 03Z. I live in Elk Grove, CA., so somewhere with in a 30mi radius of Sacramento. First thing on the list is pulling the FAST manifold and check knock sensor wires for short. Than maybe some cam and head work later on.

Anyone know anything about Corvette Care in Rancho Cordova? I have heard some good feedback on them.

Madmatt9471 has a very good write up on installing the LS7/ZR1 exhaust system.
