I have also added these 194 LED strips in the foot wells (not in pics above).
Easy plug in to the foot well light recepticles, and stick under the glove box/ under steering wheel.
I got mine at Auto Zone.
They REALLY brighten up the foot wells.
I guess I should've been more specific - I need better overhead lighting. I don't think the footwells will light up the interior enough to read anything on paper, but without actually having done the mod, I can't say 100% sure how bright it does get eye level.
Since I have a removable top, I don't see much options other than adding a small LED light bar above my rear view mirror.
Side note: I have done LED's in the trunk already.
they make a virtually clear (when off) led strip that you could always mount onto the windshield header above the rear view mirror and across from visor to visor. that would provide a great amount of lighting as you specify. obviously the best and most original looking would have been to add one of the electronic self dimming OEM mirrors that has map lighting built into it. adding LED bulbs to that fixture will give you more than enough light to do just about anything you would want to see in the pitch black. (in my 04 ce convertible i actually find the lighting too bright sometimes).

Ended up finding this on Amazon after a few minutes of searching:
