A family member asked me to come visit for Christmas. They told me they will pay for me to drive up to see them. My only problem is I'm not too keep on putting a lot of miles on my new car. They live about 1,000 miles away and I shudder to think about having an extra 2k on the clock for a car that is beginning to get middle aged (73k). I'm worried about the wear on the motor, I'm worried about the paint that may get damaged and all that comes along with a cross country trek. I'm also worried about the snow and ice because I've never driven in those conditions and obviously we have a powerful rear wheel drive machine. Am I being selfish? Or pragmatic?

I think your over thinking this a bit to much..after its a car and its meant to be driven...GM made this motor to last 300,000 miles as long as properly maintained...
Weather would be a bigger concern for me over wear on the car. And it wouldn't matter if it's a Corvette or a minivan, I hate driving in the icy/snowy weather. That being said, isn't this what we do for family and the holidays?
Why do you have to drive? Do you have to take the Vette? If they are paying you, use the money to get a rental car and put the wear on someone else's car.
Well, I mean obviously family is important. But I never new that you could take rentals such long distances. And depending on how much I'm given, I was thinking a greyhound, but the thing is that it is meant as a surprise to others in the household. So greyhounds and airplanes bring up the problem of getting from the station to home.
Drive there, I did it last year, almost 1000 miles (one way) for me too, and loved every second of it, these cars are amazing for long hauls. Just take some fix-a-flat and a small air pump.
Fill her up and enjoy the ride! I personally think you are over thinking it a bit too much. They were meant to be driven, the only thing that would hold me back would be snow/bad conditions but even then there are others that drive year round snow or shine.
If you have to ask you already have your answer and really aren't leaning towards taking your car. I say go for it and enjoy the ride. 73K is nothing.

First you are way too panicked and need to relax some -
You have "TRACTION" control on your Vette -
The car is meant to be drived and 73,000 miles is nothing, my gawd man it's not like it's going to blow up. Sounds like it needs to be driven, like it sits in the garage more than it's on the road!
If worried about the paint then put a good hard based wax on it, like ADAM Americana wax, and get a nose mask for it and go to the members home and have some fun - it will probably be the best time you have ever had in the Vette!
IMHO going is not the issue here - getting there is. Either get a rental or Greyhound/cab it since snow might be an issue. If no snow then by all means drive the Vette!
My only concern would be weather conditions. If you think you will encounter snow/ice then rent a FWD vehicle.
As for your concerns about the vehicle it will be fine, mine has around 160,000 miles on it including over 300+ track passes and several long trips around the country/ Canada etc.
