ajsart... Nice thread... I cannot imagine driving my Corvette in weather like that! that is what my Avalanche Z71 is for.. lol... These are great cars... Even in the extreme Cold! My GF is from Lagrange Oh.... but transplanted down here to TX some 20+ yrs ago,.. Watch out for those non drivers!
$20k fiberglass + titanium Corvette in salt vs. $25k steel Audi... Which one do you think is more costly to deal with the corrosion?
Agreed, of all the cars on the road, the late model (and all generations to an extent) Corvettes are some of the LEAST susceptible to the damages of salt. It won't touch the body at all. Not sure how durable our frames will turn out to be (that was/is a common rusting out issue on the older generations, that and the firewall areas) but I'm betting they'll last a lot better than the older cars.
I drove my '98 in the winter one year (and snow/ice) as it was my DD at the time until I put another engine in my old beater Accord. I had (have) Hankook V12s on it and if you take it easy, it is manageable. But someone mentioned (the OP I believe) that the wide tires like to float on top of the snow and I can agree with that as well; I live in and commute to the southern part of Indiana and there are areas here that are actually quite hilly, was sometimes challenging getting it up some of those.
No, mine will never see snow like that because I don't need it to and second the hills of western pa. could be a challenge I would not want to take on. but one thing that is a testament to the C5. My car sits in a cold garage, last week we dropped to 9 below 0, it had bin sitting from around thanksgiving. On jan 13 I went to start my car to run it and it fired right up after 7 weeks with no tender. For 16 years this is how it has bin in the winter. Last year was the first year no matter how long it sits it did not start. It had a 5 year battery in it that i replaced. I do own a tender that is still in the box.
