apparently this is an issue on the Chevy Cruze.....found this on a Cruze forum...GM has no idea what the issue is but I am leaning towards the Catalytic converter being the issue.

sounds just like this...loud banging noise

Yeah, that sounds exhaust related. More specifically, the clasps on the joints where the pipes meet anywhere in the exhaust system. My guess is that they have expanding and contracted enough times from the heat/cool down cycle possibly.

Checks the clamps anywhere on the exhaust system and tighten them up after everything has cooled down and see if it happens again.

yes we do...but my question for you is did it only do it once or several times as we hear it multiple times for a couple hours after the car is parked.

Thanks for the input
It would do it only once but it was loud pop!

When I first started reading my first thought was exhaust somewhere.

Bad cats can do strange things to a car. Things also get loose over the years and just plain go bad on exhaust systems that has no reason to it.

What are the temps running? Higher temps would most definitely lead to a bad cat as a first thing to check.

when something gets hotter than normal and then cools quickly it can cause popping. The temps across the country have been colder than normal and could explain it. Especially if it's in the exhaust system somewhere as I suspect it is.

Several hours? 3, 4, 5? Can't see cats taking several hours to cool off. They make noise but it lessens as time passes and they cool down.

I'm not familiar with the dual tank system but I'm guessing something to do with it

Didn't read all, but if from front end, continued thump after car is shut off, could be headlight gear wearing out. My C4 did this, will do it for sometime until eventually headlight wont work at all. Motor keeps turning, doesn't know it is closed. I am guessing the C5 has a similar gear and wears out, maybe not, just a guess.

It sounds like something is smacking the bottom of the car. Come home and park in the garage and it will do this periodically for several hours. It is random and there is nothing loose under the car that could cause this. We had it on the lift last week and everyone in the shop heard it but no ideas where it is coming from.

Thoughts? suggestions? dumb answers?

Default noise

Are you running the a/c while driving , long shot but could be the a/c drain dripping on the exhaust and causing the popping noise.
