Default What's it Worth

I am looking for some help on pricing for a 2003 z06 that I am looking at. Looking for some guidance on what other people are seeing in the market.

Here are the details;

2003 Black z06
31,046 Miles
2 previous owners - Traded-in to a dealership by a local guy for a 06 z
B&B Exhaust and MGW shifter otherwise stock
Brand new Potenzas - dealer put them on when it got traded
Clean carfax, looks to be in great shape cosmetically - Driver's seat showing some wear, maybe a little bit more than I have seen with vehicles with similar miles.

Dealer was originally at 25,500 when they got it in November. They told me lowest they could go was 24,500 at that point. Fast forward to this month and they are saying 24,000 is bottom dollar.

NADA Clean Retail - 24,875
NADA Clean Trade-In - 21,275
KBB Excellent - 25,615 (Private)

My target on the car was 23,000 (basically half-way between trade in and retail).

Just curious as to what people are seeing in the market for similar cars. Also, would be open to hearing any potential negotiation techniques that people have been succesful with regarding dealerships. Anything that I should / could ask for (non-price reducing - understanding that the dealer is not local to me) to help sweeten the deal?

I think the price is way too low. I am thinking more in the $40K range or just buy mine for $32K and you will be really happy with the savings you made. Mine only has 11K miles on it and I have owned it from new.

Seriously if you like the car don't lose it for a grand. Make your offer let them think about but be prepared to take it home at $24K. Seems like a reasonable deal to me, especially with the new tires.

Good luck and have fun with it when you get it out on the highway.

23-24K is about the going price for a car as you have described it. If the car is everything you want, don't let it get away for a grand !

Thanks - your user name seems to make me think you would be an expert on the subject...

I am kind of feeling the same way. The car is relatively local and I have been looking for a long time. I think I could probably find one a little cheaper if I keep waiting, but like you said, I don't want to loose it over a grand.

Welcome others thoughts on the current market.

I dont know man. I think you could find a better deal if you keep looking. I have bought two 02 z06's for less than 20k two years in a row. one had 60k miles the other 50k. If it is everything you want go for it but to me you are in the supercharged z price range at 24k. good luck. If your not afraid to travel a little to get a good deal i think you should keep looking. Hell ill sell you mine for 23k

Does anyone have any thoughts how much difference in value you might expect to see between late build '03s (beyond the spring issue dates) and '02 / '04s?

Also, at what point are you paying for low mileage just to say it has low mileage (i.e., where is the "knee" in the pricing curve around mileage)? I am trying to avoid buying a collectors car (and paying for it) but I want to find something that has been babied.

Based on the info provided, I'd say $22k or $23k would be a fair deal.

For another guy who is looking -- what date is beyond the spring issue? What should I look for to make sure 01-03s don't have spring issue?

EDIT:
Looks like Build Dates between January 2002 and Oct 2002 are the really suspect ones. Vin Range Late 2002 models (VINS over 20000) and early 2003 models (VINs under 09000).

Sound right or should I also include early 2002 VIN (00001- 20000) through late 2003 (VIN 09000+)?

$24k is a solid price from a dealer if it's clean; that's what "NADA Retail" describes

Offer him $23k and take whatever deal he offers you

Don't hold out for a better deal, that's absurd. Both the cars mentioned above had a lot more mileage and were a bit underpriced, plus they were likely private party sales, not from a dealer. You're not going to do much better than where you're at with this dealer, and you'll have somewhere local to deal with if anything comes up. If they are an OEM dealer like Ford, Chevy, Dodge, hell even Hyundai or Mazda, try to get them to throw in free oil changes for life to sweeten the deal if bottom dollar is $24k and they won't budge. My buddy did that when he got his used GT500 from the local Chevy dealer and has saved hundreds on Ford's expensive performance-car motor oil because of it.

If the car is what you want and you're so close on price, there's no reason to keep searching.

I looked for nine months before finding my '02 Z. Seems like 24K is a fair price.

50 & 60k is not 32k and an 02 is not an 03 50th. 1/2 the miles 1 year newer, and 50th anniversary raises value

I bought a pristine 1 owner 03 Z w/ 12980 miles for $24500

I think it was a good deal considering condition. You should be able to have it for $23,000 considering it as 19,000 miles more and isn't completely stock - are the stock exhaust and shifter w/ the car? If no I'd use that to our advantage considering its a 50th anniversary and a Z it hurts its "collectibility" lol take a little less than $24k if it feels right, what's a grand between friends?

Also- I just decided to replace the valve springs anyhow while I was having it tuned and serviced for peace of mind

Was yours a private party purchase? When did you buy it? I bought my 2003 Z06 with 17k on for $50 over NADA retail, for a total of $25,750, this past August. $24500 for about 13k from a dealer would be a pretty good deal, but it is a hair high for a private party sale unless you've had it for much longer than I've had mine.

I bought it from Corvette Mike New England in Plymouth, MA. Number one they knew me from browsing their inventories probably 1/2 a dozen times over the last 2 years lol, number two I bought the car in the middle of January, the saleswoman even said wait until April/may this car goes back up to $27k when I told her I wanted $24000 even. They threw in an indoor cover and we shook hands on the deal.

I agree it is a good deal and left me w/ a grand left over in my budget I put towards some basic mods- had the valve springs replaced, changed oil/tranny/diff fluids, installed vararam and had it tuned. Boom ready for spring!

I was just trying to help. I know they where 02's but there is really nothing different about the 03 anniversary cars. The NADA on my car is $23,700 so I don't think the anniversary does much for increasing value. The last 02 I bought with 50k (only 20k more miles)on it. I just don't know that 20k miles is worth $5k more to me. Also mine had the valves done and a bunch of other performance mods done. But that's what i wanted so it increased value to me. Less parts I had to buy. I did find mine local as well. I guess lucky me. I found the car I wanted for a very good price. Good luck to the OP on getting a Z he wants.

Also I don't understand buying a used car from a dealer. Most of the time you don't get a warranty and they finance you with a crap bank with tacked on interest rates. They are dealers and need to make money. Go to a credit union and get a good rate on any car you want at a fair price. 2cents

I certainly appreciate the opinion. The 50th anniversary is kinda cool - but I think it is a buyer-specific thing. I like it, so I will pay a little extra for it.

I think that the performance mods might have actually decreased the value of your car to the overall market - even though they increased it to you. I am looking for something as stock as possible, so any modded cars were a negative to me. To each their own I suppose.

I agree on the dealer stuff too. I am financing through my long-time credit union with great terms. They are also going to include a small warranty, fresh fluids and a car cover. Also, makes me feel a little bit better that they are a very large group of dealerships with a well known name and reputation.

Thanks again for the help. Provided I can figure out how to get it home in this weather I am hoping to close the deal next weekend. Hoping for a little bit of help from the weather in southern MI....

I got a 90 day warranty from this dealer, but listen its a corvette specific dealer and a very reputable one at that- only take in the cream of the crop inventory.

I may refinance w/ a credit union but I got 5% interest on a $12000 loan for 5 years that ill pay off in 3- not bad IMO.
