My 98 had the option of one. I yanked it out to put in my Kenwood DD It did work just fine however. It's now sitting in my garage coincidentally in the same bin that I have an old Sega Genesis and games in :-) Never know one day it might be worth something (hoarder gene in me says)
Have a trunk mounted 12 CD player/changer. Ordered as original equipment on my 2001. Works great, sounds great. I use it but I do not "F" with it or try to up date it.
I have not modified my changer, but the long leads to the trunk can be heard in the sound quality. Slightly less impact, but it is stock GM mid fi, so no big deal. i am just glad it works after all these years.
CD are great. Hit a record store, buy a used cd for a couple of bucks, enjoy the cruise. Hard to screw up at three bucks a pop.

I should have said a few instead of a couple. No matter, a cheap cd with new sounds can be fun.
I usually hit a used record store for the records, but I might pull over and buy a cd to have some new tunes to cruise with. As long as it is cheap. I never loose sight that it is an obsolete format, and that the GM sound system is strong but not HIFI. More like pretensions toward mid fi.
It's the thing that replaced the cassette.....and the 8-track, which replaced the vinyl discs, which replaced the reel-to-reel, which replaced the cylinders,
I have one that I added after I bought the car. It works great. I am a brass age cd user myself. I did take out the 8 track after I found I couldn't buy them any more.
The days of having to buy a CD for one, or two songs are long gone, iTunes/ipod is your friend! I just loaded about 100 old CD's onto my HD last week, only keeping maybe 10% of the content. Will be selling the 'overburden'. (spring cleaning)
For me, what it boils down to is 'convenience' in the car.
On the other hand, I still have a hig end 'cassette, and record player' that I warm up now, and then.
