My service engine light came on last month on my 2001 convertible right before I was to get it inspected. Of course, right? I performed the diagnostic check using the car's own system and all codes were "historical", not current. I reset the light and it has not come on again. Is this normal for anyone? The car passed inspection with no problems.
Chuck- am I missing something here? Whenever my check engine light comes on I pull over, open the hood, say "yep, still there", shut the hood and continue on my way. Could that light mean there is something wrong?

Don't quit your day job - comedy is not your strong suit.
Seems like few understand the codes system. Almost all codes are going to show as H when the engine is off but ignition is on. The majority of the codes pertain to systems that function either while the engine is running or the vehicle is moving. There are a few exceptions.
Don't discount H codes. They are a history of events that have occurred and can be invaluable in diagnosing problems.
You CAN pull codes while the engine is running. Next time you check the codes pull them up BEFORE you shut off the engine. You will be far more likely to see codes as C.
By the way it's likely that if the Service Engine light came on, it WILL come back again. Usually not a singular event.....
There also will be freeze frame data stored for codes that are set, this data shows the operating conditions at the time the code is set and is useful in duplicating conditions to reset these codes.
Will the DIC pull up all codes? Or do you still have to hook a scanner into the OBD2 port to pull some others? My check engine light can on and then went off. There were no codes on the DIC
