Default DIY Double DIN mod complete!

Finished my double DIN mod the other day and got the bezel back in. Thought I would show it off. I used Durmix 4747 plastic repair, Rage gold light weight body filler, Spot putty, SEM Rocker Panel spray (for texture) and SEM trim black paint.

I cut the center section out to be moved down to make room for the additional height of the double DIN HU and chopped off the top half of the ash try to make room for the lowered center piece and A/C controls

This will be the center sections new home
[IMG][/IMG]

Glued center section and the trim bezel from my Kenwood dnx890hd into place using Duramix 4747 and also filled holes left behind up top from moving the center down.

[IMG][/IMG]

Back side reinforced everything with more Duramix 4747 this thing isn't ever going anywhere now :-)

[IMG][/IMG]

After rough sanding shaping first coat of Rage Gold lightweight body filler goes on

[IMG][/IMG]

Shaped with some 80grit sand paper then went to 220 and 320 grit needs more filler but its starting to take shape!

[IMG][/IMG]

After some more filler and sanding I have the shape I want and time to spot putty the small scratches imperfections

[IMG][/IMG]

wet sanded spot putty and found a few spots I missed.. more putty

[IMG][/IMG]

Thought I was done so sprayed the SEM rocker panel paint/texture a few things popped out at me after it was black that I didn't care for so a little more spot putty and wet sanding

[IMG][/IMG]

after wet sanding and another coat of the texture being sprayed on and then blended into the factory texture (parts of the bezel that I didnt touch) I painted it with SEM Trim Black I also re used the factory ash tray cover. I sanded off the raised part of the front of it and smoothed it out the same way as the bezel after pretty much cutting it in half and then texture and paint. I then used the duramix 4747 to glue it back into place from behind. I thought about filling all this and smoothing it but I kinda liked the look of a panel there as I thought it lended more to something that would come from the factory as opposed to being custom also saved me some work too :-) but here it is all back in the car I may adjust the a'/c controls a little more but I'm pretty happy with it over all

Thanks, it wasn't all that bad of a job and only about $50 in materials with lots left over for other projects :-)

This looks great, you did a fine job on this one.

I gotta tell you they don't all go this well. When I purchased my latest C5 this mod had already been done. The had installed some model Pioneer Radio that it took me two days to figure out how to get a CD in the thing. I an sure that some of you wiz kids on here could have done that in 12 seconds, but hell I'm old. The double din modification had to be done by a Alligator with no tools at all. And then they painted it with what looks like a roller and maybe a brush and I am real sure they did use house paint.

LOL, house paint huh? geez... I can only imagine. I will admit that I used to own a car audio shop and was my own main installer so I am used to working with epoxy, trim panels and fiberglass and making my own panels or modifying factory ones however it has been many years since i've messed with any of that. It is something that anybody with a little patience and persistence can accomplish and get good results.

I think of it like to me doing a cam install or even the thought of installing my headers seems like way more trouble than I want to get into. I'm sure I could do it cause I have on cars in the past, but these days I'm not sure I want to mess with that stuff as the stress and irritation that I will cause myself would likely be far more than the amount I would spend to have someone else do it that knows what they are doing. Dennis at DD is definitely the man to go to for a bezel if you don't want to mess with it yourself. But if you do I'm sure anyone can do it however like with me and my engine stuff you have to decide if its worth the the aggravation or not.
