Default check engine light came on p1416

Ok so i added lucas to my gas thinking lets see if ican remove some carbon build up or get better gas etc ive used their fuel cleaner before and feel its helped so i figured give it a shot....

However not long after my check engine light came on and threw a p1416 code...

And literally as i am typing this sitting in my vette on my phone the code finally went away?! Lol i guess ill respond if it comes back on?

That is the passenger side air check valve. You have to remove the intake manifold to replace it. You can also spray some carb cleaner in the hose, blow it through with air, spray some WD-40, and blow that through with air. It will work for a while. The rubber diaphragm gets hard and doesn't funtion right is the issue.

I hate that check valve... A couple of years ago, my C5 was persistently throwing that code on and off for almost a year before I gave in and decided to properly address it (putting it off due to the PITA location).

During the process of replacing the valve, I also decided to relocate it the direct opposite side of the driver's side unit (as it should have been from the factory) to ease future replacement.

That code will come back. When you reset it, it does not come back right away because the computer runs diagnostics during the next two cold starts. If it doesn't get the response it is expecting it will throw the CEL again.

There is no getting away from this. You will need to change the passenger side check valve. The good news is that it's a pretty inexpensive part. The bad news is you will need to remove the air intake manifold to get to it.

PS: I'll probably be flamed for this but, I'm not a big fan of spraying WD40 in the air tubes as some members have done. I still am concerned about the WD40 fumes/spray contaminating the O2 sensors. Furthermore, it's only a temporary bandaid fix.

I guess I might not have clarified, when I was sitting there the light went away by itself while it was idling and hasn't been back on....I didn't reset the code or have it reset ever....So I believe the lucas did something to throw the code and either the computer corrected itself or the lucas went away not sure....I'll keep my eye out for the code but I drove my vette last night 25 miles or so after the light went off and another 25ish today so far and no check engine light yet

Im sure eventually it will...because eventually everything goes bad....however i really think the lucas did something because it did the same thing to someone else....so i guess this is a test of time to see if it comes back on...

That's why I just had the secondary AIR system tuned out of the PCM on my car when I got a similar code, but for the driver's side. No more worries now.

For future reference, the best way to remove carbon from the system is to step on the gas pedal. You'll have a lot more fun doing it that way too.

It takes less time to reprogram the PCM than it does to charge your credit card for the labor.

I had mine done at LG Motorsports, but I would think that any shop with the software and a tech who knows how to use it should be able to do it.

Just kidding. I'd suggest checking your own state's laws before disabling a piece of emission equipment.

From what I understand, once it's tuned out of the PCM nobody would know it was disabled.

I guess it depends on what "tuning out" implies. Does it just keep the PCM from throwing codes for it, or does it show it as non-existent?

If the former, the smog test may fail for elevated levels of whatever due to a nonfunctioning or malfunctioning emission widget.

If the latter, the test will fail due because a piece of emission gear that is supposed to be on the car isn't. (At least that's how the test gear here works.)

It's a combination of the two I believe. Mine just passed the emissions test a month ago despite the system being tuned out. It still showed as operable, but didn't throw any codes despite my never having fixed what was wrong with it.

LG Motorsports will be at the 7th Annual NCCO All Corvette Charity Car Show, 6/21/14 and so will Chuck CoW. Bet they can fix ANY tuning needs!
