I wanted to see how badly it was scratched or scuffed up, how transparent/clear it is, to try and guestimate how hard it would be to get it back to good shape, to resurface/refinish and recoat it.

Absolutely....I have always had the red top on mine and got a smoked top about 6 months ago...the few warm days we have had this year I can tell a huge difference. Plan on putting the red one back in very soon.

Both of my C5's have been two top cars and I have used the lexan top so very seldomly that I wonder why I even have it!! If I want sun on the top of my head, I'll just take the top off. It is wayyyyyy too hot to use in the summer and in the winter, the added insulating value of the painted top is a must.
I keep thinking that I should just try to trade the lexan top for a nice used cat-back exhaust, but I was always worried about re-sale value without it. I now realize that is just constipated thinking!!!! These cars are NOT investments and I doubt seriously that I will sell it anyway. What has kept me from making a decision is that mine has the typical two inch wide strip of hazing along the passenger side.

My thinking is that you will likely prefer the painted top after you have had it a while.
