Default Need Help. Targa Top.

I tried to refinish my acrylic top like I had seen in the other forums followed it step by step using the same sandpaper, and all grits of Polish.... did not turn out like the pictures. Now it is bugging the crap out of me. One is for sale near me for $500, same color as my car.

Should I pay someone to refinish my top or paint it, or buy this other one. And how much is the top for sale really worth?

Thank you!

How mad will you be when it's no longer available?
I'd buy it and then take my sweet time fooling with the acrylic one.
I'd also try the turtle wax headlight polishing kit. That worked great on my Audi lamps.

If the painted top is in great shape, $500 is not a bad price, especially if you can pick it up and save shipping costs.

And having the extra top will allow you to work on the lexan top and try and get it to look good, as mentioned above.

Yup, I agree with these two guys' responses. I just "Grabbed" a smoked roof off craigslist for "Refinishing". I'll use my blue top while I restore this newly acquired one.

Have you taken it to a body shop to see what it would take to get it right ?

An estiamte would give you a point of comparison to decide whether to spring for the painted roof.

JMO - good luck.

This is a little off topic but related to tops. My c5 has both tops but I have only used the smoked tinted top since I bought the car. Is the painted top cooler in the summer than the smoked top??

Yes but heavier and have to put more effort to not scratch the paint so I tend to remove it less often.
My work commute is 4 minutes so I usually just skip it with the painted top. The acrylic I just whip right off.

90% of my drive time is with the roof off and windows down. But I bought the smoked roof anyways. Got a quote for $1,000.oo + shipping for a "CLEAR" roof.

I think so - - rather than feel like an ant under a magnifying glass- I run the lexan top in the winter months and the solid top in the summer.

It's been low 80's here the past month or more but will start warming up in a few weeks - - I'll switch when it hits 90 in April.

There is no way id paint the acrylic top. I would love to buy it from you though if its in decent shape other than the finish now. I only have my painted top and would love an acrylic one.

If it was mine I might consider wrapping it if I didn't want to see through it anymore but that would be it. You'd be amazed at what can be brought back to life with some compounds and a good high speed buffer. If your fed up with it (and it sounds like your at your whits ends) find a local auto detailer and ask him to take care of it for you and I don't mean the guys at your local car wash a real auto detailer. Hit up a used car lot and see if you can talk to a detailer there. Those guys are used to dealing with bringing back to life sun damaged and neglected paint which is basically where your top is at now after all the sanding and polished I assume. I'd be willing to bet you could find a guy that would do it for $50 or so but def less than $100.

So what are you going to do with your acrylic top that you buggered up? Thinking of selling it? Can you post some pics of it?

Let me know how much you want for it.
I would use it in the cooler months, could never use it in the summer down here in Fl.

I Hate You..... LOL
Just got mine out this past Saturday 3/29/2014 and it RAINED the first 3 days.
Watching the morning temps because of the tires.
Drove to work this morning, and went out at lunch to "Do an Errand"... (Yeah, like everyone believed that one).

Currently 43 here in Boston area.
It's out in the driveway 'Roof Off, Windows Down'.

YAY!
