Default Help with part number

I tried to put my car in reverse to back out of driveway and it wouldn't go. Normally when this happens, I put it in a forward gear for a second, then it slides right into reverse. Tonight it was very stubborn about it. Since I'm waiting for my bezel to come back from Dennis, it was pretty easy to take the cover off and see what was going on.

I found a thread suggesting if the shift rod clamp wasn't tight enough, reverse could be problematic. So I decided to loosen and re-seat the bolt in the shift linkage clamp. As I loosened it, the head snapped off leaving the shaft of the bolt in the clamp. Of course the clamp loosened even more. So I had no choice but to pry on it to see if I could free the lower housing link. I thought if I could get the linkage out, I'd be able to remove the clamp, take the bolt shaft out from the bottom, replace it, and be on my way.

While prying, the clamp snapped in half.

I found a parts manual on the web, but of course the clamp doesn't have a part number (my luck). So I need help locating the part number for the shift rod clamp. The bolt has a part number: 12553719.

Here's a pic of what I'm looking for. Does anybody know the part number for that shift rod clamp or a suitable alternative (Autozone/Napa etc.)

Thanks,

J

I just had the same problem. Didn't do the research myself but was told (thank you forum member dadaroo) the clamp came as part of the shift rod assembly. This is P/N 12554740 to the tune of about $190 new from GMPartsHouse.com. The good news is that the clamp can be removed from the assembly and replaced on your existing shift rod without removing the rear cradle which is how the whole shift rod would be installed.

I doubt NAPA/AutoZone or others will have what you need. The clamp has four ridges on the inside that fit in grooves on the rod (keep it from rotating I guess), You might try a recycler like Vette Nuts to see if you can get just the clamp and bolt (the bolt is $8 from the same source - ask me how I know).

That is good news it can be removed. That saves hours of time in lieu of pulling the tranny.

I found it. A local spares guy had it. Crisis averted.

Who and how much if I may ask? I may be able to return an otherwise new shift rod.

Dealer referred me to a local guy who buys and parts out totaled Vettes. His name is Jim in Glendale. He operates out of his house and just happened to have the rod assembly in his garage. I got the clamp and a steering wheel for $90. I'll give you his number via PM if you want to call him.

I'm going to re-cover the wheel with a Redline leather wrap. This way I don't have to risk my wheel and no downtime. I'll put the old one up for sale when I'm done.
