I have a 2004 Z06 and I am looking to replace the original radio/CD player with a navigation unit so that I can run my iPod through the system. I would like for the end result to look nice and as original as possible.
I realize this car is not set up for a 2-din unit.
You dont need a DDin for using your i-pod i-pad or i-phone. You can get a good single din with front or rear USB and run your i-pod, i-pad, i-phone for half the cost. The only thing you will benifit from getting the DDIN with navigation is the Nav part and DVD, Everything else you can get on a single din.(Im am sure your phone has maps or some kind of navigation, so really the dvd part your gonna pay an extra 300 to 800 for).
1. You say it felt different - was it a "good" different, a "bad" different, or a "neutral" different in terms of quality and appearance? I am a little concerned because I thought I was going to be able to put nav in this car. Nav is important to me. I don't want to be fiddling with cables and phones and everything else. I had nav built into the dash on my last car and that is what I want on this car.
2. There are units that fit in the original 1.5 din space and then the screen motorizes out. Has anyone seen one of those? Do they look OK when the screen motorizes out or do they look crappy?
3. I would like to put a motorized antenna on my car to get rid of the fixed antenna. Any suggestions out there?
4. I was considering a rear view camera option as well. Has anyone had any experience with doing that?
I checked with a shop here in the Lehigh Valley that has put radios in some of the other cars I have had in the past. They said the car won't take a 2-din radio unless I put in another dash piece in that holds the radio, heater controls, etc. (Sort of like what you sent me a pic of.)
The place in Wisconsin, doubledmods, supposedly does nice work and has multiple pics on its site. Thing is - I don't want to have to drive to Wisconsin.
The local shop I reference above showed me something that is either 1 or 1.5-din and it looks like a regular in-dash unit to play the radio, cd, and ipod; however, when you turn it on it motorizes out and the screen is quite large. Have you seen anything like this in the flesh? I am curious as to how it might look and function.
Don't do that. The flip out looks terrible and will block the a/c vents. Keep it stock or do the double din mod. Atleast the dd looks close to a factory look. The one we installed Fromm double din mods could have just been a anomaly. With proper prep and the right paint it would be fine. I've seen others that look better than the one we installed from the same company

What I did and was more useful to me was mounted an iPad mini off a post/ball mount off the passenger seat mounting . That way I have nav with traffic, music, camera, email, google search, and other Apps like Pandora, and more. and for less money then any of the double din units. Plus it's always updating. The other plus is that it keeps my wife entertained on long road trips.
