Default rotor cracked!! need better set

Well the front driver rotor cracked the other day and it's time to buy a good set of rotors. I will be doing auto X and maybe a track day. I would like to get a pair for the fronts for under $500. What should I get. Thanks

If anyone has a pair they would like to sell. Let me know.

Don't get drilled rotors. Slotted don't crack as easily.

I like these rotors:

http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/brake...1&autoModClar=

Recently, I worked for a company that made stainless steel rotors and got to study/analyze/design many types. I learned that:

a) Slotted are best, as many racing teams are using j-hook style slotted rotors.

b) Hawk's quiet slots are very similar in the amount of swept area that is slotted. The pads stay parallel to the rotor and hot spots are minimized.

c) While many people believe that slotted rotors accelerate pad wear, excessively, the rotors actually run cooler, which slows down pad wear.

I've had good luck running my Baer Eradispeed rotors for the last 8 years.

I had very good luck with Baer Eradispeeds too, but I never did take them to the track so not sure how well they would hold up under those conditions.

As you can see it cracked at the drilled hole. I think i am going to go with a slotted rotor only. No more holes.
And these had maybe 5k miles on them.

Notice that the C7 Corvette has slotted-only rotors. The program manager explained that many of the drilled C6 rotors (from the factory) did crack during hard use.

use blanks, there's really no benefit to slotted with the compounds out today. they just cost more

not at all shocked to see a drilled rotor crack

how good the source iron is would be another concern. see if some company like brembo makes blanks for the c5

most low cost rotors all look to be recycled china iron. fine for the street but low carbon

The high-end rotors with holes will have the holes cast in place as part of the casting operation. The holes only get a taper finish before the casting is machined.

Holes drilled in a casting will cause some weakening of the material around the drilled area. Extreme heat from braking such as during HPDE's or track days will cause cracking around those holes. Autocross is not as much as a problem but that depends on the speeds encountered at A-X events.

I have a C5 front brake conversion on my '87 and I just use regular stock replacement rotors for autocross and track use. Raybestos "Advanced Technology" rotors work very well for the use the car gets. They typically run $60 each. Part numbers: Right- 56700 and Left-56701

Regardless of the rotor type, it's a good idea to use some sort of ducting so the brakes can get as much cooling air as possible.

Here is the most-often used style of racing brake rotor from AP Racing. This is the "J-hook" slot pattern I was referring to.

Fortunately, you do not need to spend megabucks for 2-piece rotors unless you are a serious racer (or if you have a C7).

Of course, there's a good reason slotted rotors are used more than any other - they outperform blank and drilled rotors.

Who is the manufacturer? This is a defect vs. normal wear and tear. I know my Eradispeeds have a lifetime warranty, however I've never tracked my C5 either.

I like the j hook style. I haven't found any for a c5 yet. I'm going to look a little harder.

The proof is in the fact that:

1. Most racing cars use some design of slotted rotors:

and the C7, Viper, and CTS-V all have slotted-only rotors on them.

They are the ones that brake motive sell. I know exactly when it happened. I was on my way to work just got It out for spring and was doing some spirited driving and got on the brakes hard. I then parked it for 4 hrs. After I came out to drive to lunch I noticed a problem with the brakes.

I have seen other threads of people with the same brakes having the same problem.

Most, if not all rotor manufacturers are reluctant to give up data that they've spent lots of time and money accumulating. You need to talk to the folks at AP Racing and the team leaders of factory racing teams, like the C6R team. Ask them why they consistently choose slotted rotors over blank rotors. In fact, talk to the guys who selected slotted rotors for the ACR Viper and C7.

the c5 and c6r are on carbon brakes, not iron

the less the metal is disturbed the more reliable it is. this is why blanks, made from high carbon iron tend to be the strongest of the "normal people" rotors

the slots are cosmetic thing and some very high temp pads may see a minor improvement due to gassing

street pads have no gassing problem
