idk about that, he paints and restores show cars for a living and been doing it for 30+ years. ill take his word over yours. I can see how it can affect paint when it has been on for 10+ years
I took mine off, and there is zero signs of them having ever been on there. No etching on my car. My car is 14 years old.

Same with mine, a '99 and it's black. Actually, probably closer to 15 years old if it was an early build. Really want to take my BSM's off, but this has been my worry as well. Would hate to uncover any imperfections in the paint that would stick out like a sore thumb!! My paint is not perfect, but you really have to look close to find the little nicks and scratches. Something that would draw attention in that way would not be good.
Aaron finally found a C5Z huh? Glad you made it over here!
Shoot us some details on the car. How long have you had it now?
Red 2003 with 35k miles. Bone stock other than tint, iPod input, and a trunk partition.
Ordered a few odd and ends, including a CLB and skip shift eliminator, but no real mods yet. I would guess a vararam shows up on my doorstep here before long lol.
Sorry for your problem here. But your car will look better without the BSM's.
I wouldn't touch it. Go to a professional detailer, or 'paint correction' expert. They may be able to fix it. You may make it worse, unless you really know about paint correction (I'm sure I could only mess it up, if I had a similar problem).
In any case, if you have to repaint the door (area), with modern paints, they'll be able to match it up nicely, if you get a good painter.

Nice man! I taught you well
Let me know if you need any more advice or direction. I just completed a very reasonable budget bigger brake kit here:
Before sanding I would wash with dawn to strip the paint. Clay bar, Compound, then polish to see what results you may get. If satisfied wax it and your done. If not satisfied go the wet sanding route as mentioned before. If wet sanding try a small area and see if you are satisfied with the results before attempting the whole door.
