Default Test drove a 911...

And for the life of me I can't figure out what all the fuss is about. It was a 2002 with the bigger 3.6 liter engine, but it still felt pretty gutless compared to my z06. The steering and handling on the car was fine, but nothing better than the vette. The only thing I can actually say I liked more than my car was the way the shifter felt. The car was certainly quieter, aside from the rather obnoxious noise from the exhaust reminding me why I love my Chevy. If i were seriously looking for a second car in that price range, I'd be in a 370z instead. Enjoy your Vettes ladies and gentleman, Chevrolet did a proper job with them. Will try to post a picture later

I'm sure Porsche makes a very nice car, but I just have never been a fan of them. I will agree with you that Chevy did a great job with the C5 and have kept it up with the newer generations.

Because they are around the same price range. It really is a nice car, but for the same money I can get a car just as fun to drive, newer, and under warranty. Or, for a third the price I could buy back my old 350z and have almost as much fun! (Not doing either, sticking with my z06!)

I think he was comparing price. A 2010 Porsche 911 is north of $70K and a 370Z in the mid $20K's

I drove a 370Z recently while I was deciding what I wanted, it was fun to drive but still not a Corvette

Exactly! The base c5 is a better performer than that 911, and the 911 stickered higher than a z06 back in the day!

You are comparing a Z06 to a 996 base car, what do you expect? I prefer my E46 M3 to a base 996 if that says anything.

Drive a 911 turbo, or even a 997 S and see what you think. I drove a 997tt and I am pretty sure that will be my next car. Everything about it is just better.

A 911 turbo was more than double the price of a z06 back in 2001.

Why is that? Genuinely asking, not trying to be a jerk. I'm sure the turbo is very fast, and a blast to drive, but for the money I can't see it being THAT good. I would much prefer a Ferrari f430, and I don't particularly like Ferrari.

A used f430 right now isn't much cheaper than a brand new 911 turbo.

Given the kind of Porsche I'd even be satisfied with (compared to my Z06), I'd have to spend a hell of a lot more money than I spent on my Z.

I just don't see what the fuss is all about. Sure seems like you get very little for the money when it comes to Porsche.

One of my business partners has one and let me drive it for a couple of days on my 60th birthday. It was fun but I'd just as soon have the Vette.

My exact point. The thing didn't even have a CD player, it was optioned with a cassette tape player.

Sure, that's a fair question. The one I drove was a '07 997tt with the optional seats, full leather, painted pieces inside, etc. etc. I think it was listed at $65k with low miles. Likely half, or less, than the MSRP of it when new. It's hard to describe, but it just felt like the complete package. It felt very special while driving, handled well, had tons of power, AWD so it just went without wheel spin or drama, and felt like a very solid overall car. It also backed up the feel with great looks thanks to the wide body and the better overall looks of the turbo thanks to different bumpers and other features. For $65k, I can't think of anything else I would want.

As far as the F430, I've never driven one, but I love how they look and I would imagine they are everything that I would expect them to be. Then again, you need $120k to touch a used one and I'm sure most people would prefer one of them to two turbos. It's kind of the same argument.

I will fully admit it's not entirely fair to compare the car I drove to the C5 as a C6 would be much closer in price and model year range, but I don't really want to make a lateral move if I'm going to change cars. In a perfect world, I would have both (and a F430).

Because it's a status symbol and everybody has different tastes.

General question - Can you even work on a Porsche, or do you have to take it to a dealer? Then again, most of the ones that would own this Porsche would just assume have their dealer put in the windshield washer fluid.

Default test drove a 911

I bought a new z once, keep it for a year and traded for new vette. I have never driven a 911 but have been told that there are three steps to making a repair............one- remove engine from car........two-make repair.......three- install engine back in car.
