Ahh see that's a much newer car, with a much better engine, so that makes more sense as to why you would like it. This was the first and only 911 I've ever even sat in, so I was expecting it to really wow me in the driving experience, which it sadly didn't. 278 ft lbs just wasn't enough for this torque *****

I had a similar experience. The first one I drove was a 996 C4S with the same engine in the car you drove. It was meh at best.
The 996 cars have a garbage interior that isn't much better than the C5s unless you get one with full leather. The 997 cars are a huge step up in both appearance and feel. Don't let one car ruin your entire image of the brand

If the Chevy aveo didn't ruin my image of Chevrolet, I don't think this will haha. I'm not saying it was a bad car to drive by any means. If it had been 55k new, I think it would be great, but at 80-90k, money is better spent elsewhere.
Back in '02., the previous owner of my '02Z with less then 4k on it traded it in on a '02 911 Turbo., I guess he felt the 911 T to be an upgrade, for $110k it had better be. I've never had the chance to drive one but Car & Driver stated then that "the performance & refinement is simply intoxicating" Hope his loss is my gain but I have my doubts.

The 911 is overpriced but still a good car. The Cayman is Porsche's great sports car.
Neither are going to impress you if you want a muscle car, however. That is Mercedes AMG territory.
Someday I'll own a 911. I love the looks and although I've only driven one, a few years back, it was sweet. I'm a car guy and like a wide range of vehicles. I don't understand the Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge vs. German car thinking. Pretty limiting to only like one car or even one brand. I love Corvettes, having owned 4 over the past 15 years, but it's not the only car I covet.
IMHO the Cayman S is the only Porsche to consider as a ‘drivers’ car.
The 911 is their halo car, and it’s nice enough, but sooo spendy. And the engine is in the wrong place, silly tradition-bound Germans. It just is: there’s no way around it.
I very seriously considered a nice used Cayman before I bought the C5. The Cayman is super light on its feet, incredible handling, even stock. It makes most other cars feel like they are built out of marshmallows.
Normal maintenance is no worse than a Vette. It has it’s foibles, such as the entire car must be lifted & tilted to properly drain the oil. But by and large, they are pretty bulletproof. Parts & mods are far far more expensive. We whine about ‘Corvette tax’; the Porsche tax is in another realm.
I went with the C5 as the Cayman was just too much $$ compared to the Vette. And the Vette is way, way faster
Basing performance vs. dollar across the board is something I've only seen on Corvette forum. If you're comparing a 911 to a Z06, then it better be the GT3 or GT2.
I owned a 996, here are some things about the car: the interior blows away the C5; on coilovers 996 has the BEST turn-in of ANY car I've driven (Lambos, Viper, C6Z, M3, STi, etc); stereo was horrible; easy to work on; more comfortable for DD use; etc.
The major downside of the non-turbo/GT3 cars is the IMS bearing, which can fail without notice and take out the motor, I bypassed this issue by swapping an LS1 in the car. By far, the most fun overall car to drive that I've ever owned (beat Murcielago and supercharged Viper).
I know price is different but dont compare a 2002 to a 2014. That is apples to oranges in tech, regardless of money.
Considering my initial comparison was to my 2001 z06, i would say it's pretty apples to apples with tech. The 911 felt mildly better than my old 350z, which was only a year newer.

Correct car to judge against, money aside, would be the GT3 as it is the focused NA track car.

Too bad the engine is hidden away in some dark hole with very limited to no access unless you're willing to remove the carpeting and unscrew the access panel. Even then, you have limited access. It's as if they don't want you to see it or touch it.
They sure are beating you up in defense of a Porsche.
like you said there are two different factors here:
Price or Year and Model
If you look at Price the vette wins hands down.
If you look at flag ship, top of the line version for the same year it is a toss up as long
as price is not figured in.
The Porsche has better leather, better interior, better interior quality, better seats.
It cost a hell of a lot more as well.
I went to college for one reason, to buy a Porsche (really). I love them. I had a 944s in High School.
Yes that is a cheap *** Porsche. But the leather and feel of the inside was better in that 1986
base line then in any GM product made to date.
Once I could afford the Porsche I decided I wanted the Corvette. I wanted 750 hp
(super charged vette), and did not care about the leather any more. No I don't have 750hp.
not yet anyway.
When test driving a Porsche I can afford I get the ya ok whatever... its fun but nothing to blow my mind.
I'm around a lot of Porsches, I am racing this weekend with a Porsche Club. Great bunch of guys
great car, but the cost for the same level on a race track is way out of my price range.
The Porsche guys love my vette. I have let a few of them drive it. They love the power in the straights.
(remember supercharged). Many of them have said if on a budget they would go with a vette.
The fastest Porsche there hit 130 mph, its was a brand new $300k black thing. I don't know model
numbers, but to the Porsche guys this was the holy grail.
I hit 129 mph, a better driver in my car could have gotten closer to 140 before reaching the corner.
I don't break as hard as I could and I dont leave the corner as fast as I could. I'm still learning.
I don't have $300k, I had $25k and I built what I felt was the best car for the money.
there isn't a $30k Porsche that will come close to my vette in what I am looking for in a car.
My old vette is no where near as nice a finish on the inside, but I will race any Porsche on
any track on any day and I will hold my own.
Any yes I can work on my vette. I am sure I could learn to work on a Porsche, after
I bought the tools and the books.
I bought a new z once, keep it for a year and traded for new vette. I have never driven a 911 but have been told that there are three steps to making a repair............one- remove engine from car........two-make repair.......three- install engine back in car.
To top your Z06 you need to step it up a lot, at least to a turbo. There is a GT-2 I like to mess with when I see it on Skyline. It's an older guy and he doesn't push it, but I know he spent about $200k more than I did, too.

I destroyed a Cayman s twice from a roll in my 99 6 speed coupe I had..I know he felt embarrassed
