Default C5 door lock problem

I have a 2000 corvette and the other day I went to unlock the door with the key and the key twists both ways with no resistance. It won't lock or unlock. Does this sound like a door lock problem or an electronic problem? Also I don't have the keyless remote for the car. If I buy a keyless remote will I be able to program it to work for this car? And will it unlock the doors even though the lock itself isn't working? Any help I can get will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the info. I saw a remote on Amazon for 70 bucks for 97-2000 corvette. Will I be able to program this one? It says it's an OEM replacement.

I have a 2000 and from what I understand it's a one year fob. The 97-99 have a passive mode. I would check with Gene at GM Parts House for the correct fob. Here's the procedure from a 2000 owners manual

*** from GM parts House

||--Genuine GM Key FOBS/Transmitters--||

10253839 – 97-99 – See Note Below.
10432147 – 00 - See Note Below.

Both the 10253839 and 10432147 FOB’s have changed to 19299230. GM has changed both FOB’s into one part number FOB covering years 1997-2000.
$91.00

Not at home now but if you want a good link on how to remove the door panels without screwing them up let me know.

Even if you take it to someone else to fix I would recommend you remove the panel yourself and reinstall it afterwards.

It's the rod inside of the door that has came off. It's not hard to fix if you find the right clip or even look inside your door panel and the clip could be in the bottom of the door. It would be worth a little bit of your time to check this before calling a lock smith. With a fob you should still be able to unlock the door. Hope this helps. Gary.

The rod did fall off the lock. It's fixed now. Thanks everyone for all your help.
