I have a 1999 Corvette coupe which I bought new in Oct '98. It has the original tires. Although they still have plenty of tread life, I would like to replace them just because of the age. I am looking at the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3. I realize that these are not "run flat" tires. Any thoughts or recommendations.

Your 16 year old tires are dangerously old - - so yes- a repalcement is in order. I had non runflat Nitto 555's on my car - -replaced them with Michelin run flats - - harder ride, but more "safety' for road trips.
I was in the same situation as you. Fortunately I found myself in a local Discount Tire store. I ended up with nitto 555 tires and to this day I am very happy with the performance they deliver.
I am equally pleased with the service and price I received from Discount Tire.
I had excellent results using TireRack. Enter your vehicle year and look at your options. Identify your driving style. Look at comparisons. Read the reviews. That will help you in making an informed decision.

Those Michelin tires are very good. But another tire to look at is the Hankook Ventus V12s - they are not all season, but they are a very good tire and you can get a set for about $650.
I think those tires a good choice, I will be needing a grand touring tire when my performance go away.
Right now, I have a mixed set of Kumho tires, arranged to mimic the state of the art tires that have a separate design for torque delivery at the rear and steering at the front. I like it, and they have worn well.
But tire design is always moving ahead. In my opinion , If you select a recent design from a major manufacturer, you might not be at the top of the market, but you will be among the best available.

Installed a set of Hankook Ventus V12 Evo2 on my 04 today. Not much to report so far but I like the ride and the noise is nill. Really a nice looking tire and sidewall. Replaced my original run flats. Feels like a different car now. Ordered from tire rack in the afternoon and they were at the installers the next day. My total after install fee was $684.
That includes a $80 rebate.
