Default My knee is burning.

My center console gets almost too hot to touch on the drivers side. If my right knee is resting on it, it almost burns. Where is this heat from? The exhaust?

Anyone running ceramic coated exhaust? I know it made a huge difference on my motorcycle.

My tunnel gets warm - - but hardly burning-- you may have lost a heat shield that covers the exhaust as it passes through the tunnel.

Suggest you inspect under the car - - but you can also install a heat barrier like Reflectix under the carpet - - sounds like you may have a bit more of an issue.

I installed Home Depot's HVAC Duct Insulation. "Frost King".
See pictures.
Great Idea from another thread.

What kind of mufflers are you running? We had a Flowmaster come apart on a racecar once, the baffles then plugged the pipe and got the exhaust so hot that the paint turned brown on the tunnel. The C5 I'm turning into a track car came with Flowmasters and both mufflers had baffles loose inside.

"More on the Change"... I'm NOT one that wants the silent treatment.
I just didn't find the "DRONE" on the Mass Turnpike fun. Stock exhaust, stock LS-1.
Top off, Windows Down Coupe, almost down to 30 degrees out. That's me.
But I also enjoy my sound system. Exhaust at ~70 > 80 Long Distance is almost painful.
Last October, on a 'nice warm day',.... My sneakers almost melted from the 230+ degree engine heat... ugh.
I saw this in another thread.
Sound deadening is GREAT.
Thermal difference is similarly GREAT.
As, the only Big things I had to remove were the seats and console, it was a no-brainer.
Be sure and get behind the rear interior quarters and ALL speakers as well.
I also did the two doors.
Less than a pound a roll, and about 7 rolls, (I think) (memory of a slug here).

My exhaust is stock with Z06 mufflers. It might be missing something, there is a chance the PO took some go fast parts of prior to sale. My glove box stuff gets hot, too. But the left side of the center console where my knee rests on straights gets damn hot. I'll have to get it on the lift and see if there is anything obvious.

I like the idea of the insulation, I did something similar on my truck project.

It seems the heat you are experiencing near your right knee, is extra ordinary. Might need a look see to know if something is touching the tunnel under there.
I also had the insulation/sound deadening kit from Marc at Vettnuts (a forum vender) installed. Complete coverage, even in the doors. It made a wonderful improvement in reduction of interior heat, and improved listening to stereo or conversation with a passenger due to less road noise.
I also insulated the tunnel plate, as well.

Still sounds like a sports car, and there is still some heat on long drives in hot weather; but a wonderful improvement in the quality of the ride. A mod that will never wear out. Good value for your dollars and effort, I think.

My Primary reason for even 'starting to think abou this' was a trip out the Massachusetts Turnpike and down into Connecticut with the car.

First and Foremost, I DO LOVE playing around on short drives, (a little GOOSE of the pedal)...

BUT

That round trip, which became a little over 200 miles, at 70 to 80mph highway cruising, became a "LABOR"....
The """"""""DDDDDRRRRROOOOONNNNNNEEEEEE""""" " of the exhaust was exhausting (forgive the pun).

Now, I can cruise and with the roof on and windows up, I don't have to ratchet up the stereo to hear it over the mufflers.

Imagine that the trip that brought this about was with the roof off and windows down. I couldn't imagine having done that ride with the vehicle closed..... ugh.

YES, IT DRAMATICALLY reduces noise.

Its the cats that get hot. if you wear shorts in the summer and lean your right leg on the console skirt it is very hot. I made a heat blanket ( heavy duty tin foil and a Styrofoam insulation sheet. )to put between the cats and the tunnel area ( under the car. And I added some insulation between the rug and the tunnel on the inside.

Awesome, thanks ET. It seems to be right next to the shifter (wearing shorts today). Next mods on the list is an x-pipe and high flow cats. I will call Finishline Coatings today and see what it will cost to ceramic coat.

I think coating the pipes, installing insulation, and the tunnel plate, I should get the inside temps down a bit. My console is black with gray interior. I was thinking of doing some insulator/pimp factor tunnel pieces as well.

Something like this

BTW, that ZR1 had a full custom interior that was insane. He traded in a Ferrari, put $200k into the interior and still had money in the bank from the trade. He said it was the best purchase he ever made.

For what it's worth, a screen capture of the URL will get you to the right website but wrong page. This forum software shortens the display of URLs. But Elite doesn't have a whole lot of pages.

I'm a fan of theirs. I've installed the thermal abs, radiator screen and chassis rails on all of my Vettes.

My car does the same. It may not be as hot as yours with the burning thing but it does get pretty hot right there were your leg rests against the console. I have never worn shorts and it does get all that warm on my jeans, but I can feel the heat and if I touch that area it is pretty hot to the touch. I always thought it was just a Corvette thing and don't let it bother me.

Solution might be to wear real clothes..
