I agree with the above. If you're trying to get the whole thing off then you need to remove the clip from the front. If you're just trying to remove the button then that should just pull off. I replaced mine with a ball type and had to get the adapter for it.

Okay, I just looked at my old shifter ****. The cover for the button just pulls off. Couldn't really tell how the button itself would be removed. Not sure if it can be removed without damaging it. If anyone has removed it I hope they chime in for ya.

c5 shift ****
the **** is off and the leather cover removed. Looking in from the bottom there appears to be a white tab that if turned a quarter would release the button. it does not seem to want to turn so that is why I am trying to find someone who has done this. I am afraid to force it and break the piece holding the button in. thanks for your reply.
