Default front drivers side squeaks while driving.

I have a 97. The front drivers side has a high pitch squeak. That seems to go away when the brakes are applied. Anyone have an idea what could be causing this?

Is it a steady squeak?

Does it change with speed?

Does it vary if you make a turn?

Does it change if you go over a bump?

If you drive in the rain does it do it also?

Does the outside temperature ever seem to have an affect?

Can you press down on the driver side fender and release it like you are testing the shock and hear anything?

How many miles on the car?

When did this start and what work was done of the car prior to it starting?

Can you think of anything else to tell us? We can start checking things out once we get some info from you.

I bought the car on April 12th. It has 101k miles .. it started a few weeks ago.

No work was done prior to the onset of the sound.

The outside temperature doesn't seem to have an effect.

I live in vegas. It has yet to be in the rain since I've owned the car.

When I push down the the drivers side directly over the front wheel. It does make a faint squeak

It sounds like a birds chirp.

The sound goes away when I press on the brake pedal.

It doesn't seem to change with speed. If I have the windows down I can hear it still upwards of 40 mph. After that I'm not sure as to the wind noise being quite loud.

I appreciate you taking the time to try to help

I would say brake pads are in your immediate future.

If it's just the cost of brake pads. I'd be ecstatic. I'm hoping it's nothing major. I love love love my c5. I'm a guy that worked extremely hard for a long time to buy this car.

I just bought ac Delco iridium plugs. The red wire gm spark plug wires. Borg warner brass oil pressure sending unit. ... 10w 30 ams oil, amsoil filter. Amsoil tranny fluid and amsoil rear differental fluid. I don't want to do anything until I figure out cost and remedy of this squeaking situation

I don't think it is the pads but it could be. A high vibration squeak from the back of the pads or from rubbing/touching the rotor. If it is from the back you can remove the pads and apply some of the special grease for that purpose. I have to do that on my wife's Lexus but it only makes the noise when backing in reverse WHILE also applying the brakes.

You could put the left front wheel in the air and see if spinning the wheel you can hear anything. I would do that.

If you don't hear anything I would still pull the wheel/tire and inspect the condition of that brake for anything obvious.

I prefer to think it is suspension related and when you brake the downward motion takes the "rub" out of it's normal position.

I still want you to:
Take a turns to the left and right and see if that affects the sound.
Try going over a speed bump or rough road and see what affect that has.

Could be a shock, ball joint, suspension bushing, etc. Ultimately you may have to jack it up and put the drivers wheel on a ramp to load everything. Then get under with an automotive stethoscope while a friend moves the fender down and up.

How does the driver front tire look with regard to wear?

I jacked up the car. When I tried spinning the wheel. It did spin. It didn't spin as freely (easily) as I think it should have. I didn't have to muscle it or anything. It just seemed to take a bit more effort than I would have thought.

As I turned the wheel. I could hear a very light friction sound. When I turned the wheel fast enough I could hear the squeaking sound I hear while I am driving.

Do you think that is the brake pads or maybe the rotor? Could it be something else entirely?

Pull the tire and do a visual on the pads/rotor and turn the rotor hopefully you will be able to locate noise also feel the wheel bearings for wear. I still think it is the wear squeeler letting you know the pads are past due or it broke off and fell into the pad. Also examine the the inside of the rim. Nothing serious I am convinced. Good luck and keep us posted. Rob

That is good news. Makes finding the issue easier. If a visually inspection and "touchy feely" of the wheels bearings is not conclusive then I would remove the pads and try spinning again.

Wheel bearings normally make a rumbling noise not a squeak so I put my money on the brakes.

Default update

You guys all kick ***. Thank you all so much.

I think my rotors were warped. There was plenty of pad left. The brake pad noise squeakers were not seen. I bought new ebc blackish looking dimpled and slotted rotors and bought new akobobo brake pads

Noise is gone. Thank god because it was loud. Annoying and quite embarrassing
