Ive owned my 2000 coupe for over a year and I can count on 1 hand the times ive used the flip up headlights. well this year while washing the vette ,I put the headlamps up and I noticed that they both went up when I put the parking lamps on which I knew wasnt right, I also noticed that when I shut them off I would get a loud grinding noise on the left side for about 1 minute then it would stop. well I disconnected the left hand head lamp and the right side works properly and that it doesnt go up when I put on the parking lights, I noticed that I have alot more play in the shaft to manually open the head lamp on the left side and it does open the flip up with out grind so I dont think its a worn gear ,could it be the motor itself. it works ok but why would it affect both lamps ? thanks in advance
The gears on these things are notorious for wearing out, and that sounds like your problem. Plenty kits out there for the fix. Takes time, but it's doable.
Please also realize that when the gear breaks they both will go up with parking lights on. While this may seem unrelated it is not and is proof that you have a gear problem.

I'm gonna need some clarification on that, because when I read it, what comes out is, "When the thing that makes the lights go up is broken, the lights still go up when they're not supposed to."
That sounds more like some kind of broken limit switch or stop bumper.
Possibly, but with the ones I've seen, all one needs is a couple of broken teeth to hear that noise. I'd be surprised to find a broken bumper, it's a pretty stout part of the bracket.
As to the previous post you needed clarification for, I understand your point. Perhaps the poster mean that the lights will still go on, or that the actuator will still run with broken teeth?

Just seemed like I recalled multiple threads about sourcing/replacing the bumpers, with similar symptoms.
And I'm not saying the gear doesn't also need replacement: lord knows having the motor keep turning when the light is at one extreme or the other can't be good for it. Might be a chicken-and-egg deal where the gear strips because the whole system is driving past the stops.
I "thickened" one of the bumpers on mine, of course I don't remember why.
Seems like the chicken/egg analogy is the rule with these things when they develop gremlins.
