If you indeed put 6.5 quarts in the car, then I don't see any way it would read a full quart low. Some owners have reported that with 6.5 quarts in it may read about a 1/2 quart low, but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule. I know on my '03, 6.5 quarts hits the full mark right on the spot.
I just changed oil for the first time in my new used 2001 Zo6. I put in the recommended 6.5 quarts but the dip stick shows I'm one quart low? I haven't measured the stick (how long should it be) but it is in a twisted condition. Could it have been messed with or?????? I'm not going to add more until I hear from someone about this.
Someone probably replaced the dipstick at some point with the wrong one. Earlier models had had welded stainless steel exhaust manifolds and the dipstick and tube were also different lengths. You have to use a matched set. The tube attachment point is different for the two styles. If you know someone else with a Z06 measure the two dip sticks.
The overall length including the pull ring of the 2001-4 dipstick is 28". and will protrude from the correct tube 2 3/4" (approx.)
The overall length of the 1999 and 2000 dipstick is 26" and protrudes about 2 7/8" (approx.) from the tube.
If you put the 1999/2000, stick in the 2001-2004 tube it will only extend about 3/4" from the bottom of the tube.
I think there is a different part for the '97 and '9 models as well, but I don't have that one.
