Default Short dip sticked ?

I just changed oil for the first time in my new used 2001 Zo6. I put in the recommended 6.5 quarts but the dip stick shows I'm one quart low? I haven't measured the stick (how long should it be) but it is in a twisted condition. Could it have been messed with or?????? I'm not going to add more until I hear from someone about this.

Sorry sometimes I just can't help myself when I see an opportunity. and it is a real question. I may be shorting the quantity even though I put in the stated amount.

Did you start the car and let the oil pressure build up? I'd run it for a min or two and then check it again.

You wouldn't believe how long mine is.

All seriousness aside...I've got a 2004 LS1, but I doubt there's a difference in the dipstick tube length.
The "corkscrew" thing is normal. Just measuring the actual silver part of the stick, it's 23-13/16" to the top (full) hole, 24-5/16" to the bottom (quart low?) hole. (Add another 1/2" if you're including the yellow plug portion with the o-ring.)

Are you sure you put in 6.5 quarts and not 5.5? Not saying you don't know how to count, but maybe got sidetracked or something while putting the oil in?

If you indeed put 6.5 quarts in the car, then I don't see any way it would read a full quart low. Some owners have reported that with 6.5 quarts in it may read about a 1/2 quart low, but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule. I know on my '03, 6.5 quarts hits the full mark right on the spot.

Yep, 6.5 quarts and my dip stick is as it should be. Lol Beginning to think I can't see such clear oil. Going to check it in morning before starting. I appreciate all the advice.

If you're used to 'dead dinosaur' oil and don't have great lighting in your garage, the first time or two checking can be misleading.

If it still registers low, then add a bit. And always remember, "it's not how long it is, it's how you use it"!

Sorry, the devil made me do it!

Mine took closer to 7 to reach the full mark. Probably depends on how long you let it drain, the angle the car is at on the jack stands/lift.

I drain the oil out of the pan until it's no longer a steady stream and then replace the drain plug hand-tight. Next, I replace the oil filter (I prefill the new one with clean oil). I then remove the oil pan drain plug and let it drain until it's no longer stead stream, again (a good bit more comes out.... at least it makes me feel better ). Next, I put in around 6-6.5 quarts (When I start to see it registering on the dipstick I call that good) and start the car up, let it idle for a few mins, then shut it down. Check for any leaks, then put the car back on flat/level ground. By that time the oil has had plenty of time to drain back to the pan, so I check oil level again and add as necessary to full mark.

My 2001 Coupe has always taken a FULL 7 quarts to top off. I believe you have the same issue.
