hi
has anyone replaced a windshield and watched it being done?
want to know how the molding on outside comes off without damaging
it.
does it have to be replaced whenever the windshield is replaced?
thanx

The windshield on my 2000 convertible was replaced about a year and a half ago by Safelite. The tech who did the job looked at the molding/seal and told me that it looked good and that SOMETIMES they were able to remove and reinstall it successfully. He said other times it might LOOK good but come apart during the removal process. They keep the moldings in stock at the location I used. I was lucky in that he was able to remove and reuse the one on my car and saved me the $400 plus that the piece costs.
Mine was replaced they took the top off and there were screws that hold the molding trim on. Then they have to take a blade tool to cut threw the sealant. Then they clean the area apply the new sealant then reinstall the molding and screws top back on and done.
If you mention the molding to the repair guy, and they are not jerks, they will be more careful to not destroy it. I got my glass replaced and they guy was able to remove the molding without damaging it.
You certainly can salvage the old molding (being extremely careful), but given the age of the C5 replacing is a good idea if you can source the parts. Here’s a before / after to get an idea.
