Default Service column lock question

I have the Service column lock installed on my car and for the first time I killed the battery. The Column isn't locked as it should but..... every time I turn on the car I have to hit the reset button on the dash to clear it. Can I do something to stop hitting this button every time I turn the key as its getting annoying now.

first make sure battery properly charged, reset with DIC, disconnect battery for 2 minutes and see if that helps to stop problem. good luck.

I think I know what the OP is trying to communicate, but:

8VETTE7 IS the column lock guru, no one else knows more. If what I say is in any way incorrect I sure hope Chuck (AKA 8VETTE7) corrects me.

I have seen Threads where people have installed CLB devices but still have some related issues like you even if the column does not lock. Most are due to low system/battery voltage.

Installing a LMC5 should eliminate these related CL issues and does not require removing or undoing any previous "fixes".

I have a "canned" write up for installing the LMC5 but it is at home on my desktop. I can provide that later if you like.

I don't know what's installed as it was already in when I bought the car.
I was just told it was already done. Something is installed as it's not locked in place. It's says it's locked every time I turn car in on the DIC. I hit reset and gone

Here is my LMC5 info:

I consider the LMC5 to be the best Column Lock problem permanent fix out there. It also does not require you to “undo” any previous CL attempts to resolve this issue. Their eBay ads have a good video that shows the install at the BCM. It does not cover everything in the written instructions. So, read the instructions and also here is some extra info. In some cases, the BCM timing is off just enough to cause some issues. They make several versions and they can swap out/provide one of these if you have any issues. Their customer support is as good as it gets.

Not uncommon for people to "put the column in a pre-lock condition" and not know it and then start with the install. In other words, they started with the column lock “energized’ even if it was not actually locked yet. If not actually locked yet, it will be as soon as you turn the steering wheel after the LMC5 install. It will then remain in the locked condition until you cause the motor to unlock. It will then remain in the unlocked condition since the motor is then unpowered with the circuits disconnected.

Here is one way to prevent that if your column locks and unlocks normally:

If the CL is functioning normally you don't not need the Unlocker, merely turn the ignition ON, pull fuse #23, turn ignition OFF, turn the steering wheel (left and right) and verify it is unlocked. Next, disconnect the negative battery terminal, re-insert fuse #23 and continue with the install.

Install the LMC5 and forget the column lock forever.

I installed lmc5 and i still get the message occasionally, i have talked with richard and we are monitoring it. I know it is critical to let dic run its gammet before starting the car. I may have to install the brown wire to get rid of all cl issues, 8vette, what is your take on my issue. Thanks

Had the same problem after installing LMC5 in my 01 - brown wire thing fixed it. In my 04 the brown wire fix was not needed. Go figure...

Other than being a little annoying is there any issue with just resetting the message on the occasion that I do get the message verses doing the brown wire fix. I can hit reset on occasion easier than getting in the footwell at 65 yrs young. Thanks

Bruce,

I think that's a question for Richard.
