So after several years I decided to pull my 2003 Z06 out of storage and drive it full time. I miss lots of storage pockets, GPS and a multi disc player from my other car. While the Corvette OEM stereo looks good, it feels cheap and the single disc player just won't cut it for me anymore.
So what's the latest in a double din touch screen GPS/stereo, that's easy to install and won't cost me an arm and a leg?

you should check the forum in the general section for more info right now. many forum members use double d mods as their source for all the gear. a double din will require you to get a new console or modify your existing one. double d mods has these in stock with a good selection of head units, amps and speakers. you will probably want to get ipod connection too, which will take the place of the multi cd you had.
It'll be hard to find a better deal than Mr. Bill suggests and even more difficult to find a vendor to match the customer service Doubledmods provides.
I was hoping they finally had something that would fit in the stock console without having to mod or replace it. Guess not.
If you don't want to mod the bezel, crutchfield.com has units that will work. They have units with flip up screens if you are looking for a large screen.

I just spoke to Dennis (of Double D Mods) in a similar vein. If you want a screen (nav/touch), I think you'll have to go to a double din - you'll just need the bigger real estate that the double din provides. If you're just looking for an upgraded radio (bluetooth, aux input, Pandora, HD, integration for your smartphone, etc. - things that didn't exist or were not readily available when are cars were made), you can look at a single din head unit. Dennis advised that our OEM radios are a 1.5 din size, a very oddball size which the aftermarket really doesn't support. If you go with a single din head unit, you would get a supplied faceplate that would act as a filler - nothing really permanent or which would constitute modification of your console (at least in my book). Dennis can get you set up whichever way you choose. Good luck and let us know what you end up doing.
This is my recently completed DD Mod installation. I just finished it and haven't driven the car yet due to the lousy weather. I recovered the entire bezel and armrest console in leather, done myself.

That looks fantastic, looks professional and not at all diy! Did you document the process? It looks like something I would try with a little insight on how you did it
Regarding the covering I did, I never considered documenting the process, basically because since I never did it before, it was all trial and error. I followed some ideas from a friend of mine, use to be Chazboy on this forum, who did his himself. After I started screwing up, I deferred to a friend of mine who is a nationally known custom upholsterer, to tell me what I did wrong and how to correct it myself. He's way too expensive to pay him to do it, but he was willing to help me. At one point I was mostly done and ripped the whole thing off and started over. It was actually worth it, because I did make several improvements over my first try. It was all a matter of gluing a little, stretching with heat, smoothing it out carefully and trimming with fresh x-acto blades to get smooth cuts. In order to do it in one piece it unexpectedly required a lot of stretching and a seam and cut by the driver's knee. My previously mentioned friend is going to make me some sort of knee rest pad to hide the seam area, if I decide I need it. You really can't see it when installed. At several points I started to regret doing this because I thought it wasn't going to come out good, but I'm glad I finished it. The armrest console was much easier, I did that in one afternoon. The bezel took a few weeks of trying. Right now to finish it off I'm having Redline Goods make me a custom armrest to my own design. It will include an embroidered design I striped up. Just ordered it today and I'm a little impatient for it. BTW, as luck would have it, I went back to buy more material and the store went out of business.
Mr. Bill, that looks like you have a Pioneer AVIC-X920BT... certainly correct me if I am in error. I hope your experience with your Pioneer head unit has been better than mine.
I have an AVIC-X920BT and my experience is that it is a total piece of crap...
- the bluetooth stopped working
- the CD player has held one of my favorite CD's hostage
- the dedicated iPhone Pioneer Pandora App stopped working after a year and Pioneer has never fixed/upgraded it. I use the regular Pandora app now.
- the cooling fan (must have) died because when I crank it up loud, after 5 minutes, the unit cuts off the sound. I am pretty sure this is a mechanism to prevent overheating
OP... Stay away from Pioneer! I can also tell you the Pioneer navigation is awful.
My next headunit is going to be the Kenwood dnx692HD (which uses Garmin navigation btw) that I will get from Double Din Mods when he gets them in.
