i am brand new to this forum
I have a 2001 z06 6 speed.
driving home the security light came on. when i got home I turned off the car and it restarted fine. the next day I tried to start the car and it didn't turn over and thought i had a starter problem. i tried to jump it with no luck. couple days later tried to push start the car and found dead battery and steering locked. tried to jump the car and headlight's came up and horn blaired. pulled horn fuse but steering did not unlock and car still did not turn over. read forums and installed new battery with no change. what would cause steering lock, battery dead, horn stuck on and car not turning over. wheels stuck cranked all the way. towing company wont tow car with wheels locked turned all the way.
called dealer and recall already done. ordered bypass kit and have to pull steering column to release steering lock. need to fix starting issue horn blairing and headlights on. have new battery disconnected to keep headlights off. is it the bcm? and does the dealer (stealer) need to fix that once i can tow it to them?

Do NOT be afraid to use some arm strength to get the column to unlock. may need to try it more than once.

Column locking when the battery goes dead is a common problem with manual trans C5's and automatic trans C5's before 2001. Permanent solution is an LMC5 aftermarket bypass device. Google Compliance Parts for more info.

Horn Membrane is a relatively common failure:

Then post #39 on page 2 for replacement membrane.

Until you get to that problem just pull fuse 11 in the engine compartment fuse box.

Pull codes once you get the horn fuse out. Codes may help with other problems:

Here is how to pull and post codes:

OR

http://www.c5forum.com/ayc/dtcdic.php

Post ALL your codes including the H or C or HC that follows each 5 character code. If you have any Unnnn codes then list the sensor under which the Unnnn code appears. For example 28-TCS U1016.

The same Unnnn codes can appear under multiple sensors and it is helpful to know which sensor the Unnnn code is associated with

.

With the key in the ignition and turned to the start position but not cranking the engine, what is happening to the security light on the dash???? On solid??? OUT???? Blinking???

In the passenger foot well is the carpet wet????
\
If so get the carpet out of the car to dry. Drying it in the car can cause humidity to condense inside the BCM. Look at the BCM. Large metal container in the passenger foot well to the left of the fuse box. Are ther any signs of water stains?? (white oxidation on the aluminum?? Is there any indication that the fuse box has water in it????

Welcome to the Forum............

PS. If it were me the stealer would never see the car let alone work on it. If you are a little mechanically inclined there is FAR more C5 knowledge on this forum than in the combined knowledge of all stealerships. JMHO

Your wheels cranked all the way is likely why your column won't unlock. The steering wheel is putting pressure on the locking pin and it cannot retract. Try pulling the steering wheel in the same direction as the wheels are turned and then turning the key. Might have to jack the front of the car to release some of the pressure on the steering column. This is similar to when people with auto trannys who park on a steep incline without setting the parking brake prior to shifting into park. They get torque lock and it makes shifting out of park difficult to impossible without releasing the pressure.

Were there any other wierd symptoms going on along with the security light? Maybe erratic gauges? Might have a loose connection or chaffed wire somewhere.

As 8VETTE7 said there is plenty of knowledge here to help you through the issues. All the dealer will do is empty your wallet.

Most problems have occurred before to someone on the forum and can be remedied.

Good Luck.
