Yeah... I think so. Despite being stuck here waiting for the tow truck I do love this car. I guess its one of those things when owning an older car like this
The connection at the transmission position lever may have broke or popped off. The flat plastic piece shown in the picture can pop loose and the cable releases from the shift lever. If your lucky and the clip has not broken it can be reattached.
I'm dealing with this right now as my vert is jacked up in my garage.
As the others have said, its likely related to the shift cable. It could be:
1. The bushings. The Dorman kit will work.
2. The cable itself. New cable is between $60 and $100 depending on year.
And as others said, there are some good write ups here. HOWEVER; I will caution you on the fragility of the cable guides. How do I know? I had my shifter out and was using the Dorman bushing and all was well when POW, I broke the damn cable guide. So now I am having to jack up the car, remove the exhaust and tunnel plate to replace the whole cable. Urgh.
So if you do try to just swap out the bushings, be VERY careful with the cable. The manual tells you not to bend it and they mean it! The plastic guide is probably the diameter and thickness of a small drinking straw or coffee stirrer and from years of being stuck in the hot tunnel it gets fragile.
I share this as I HAD my car fixed by just putting the bushing it ($5 part and one hour of time working from up top) when I lifted the shifter about 1/2" too high and snap! Now I am at about 4 hrs worth of work and a $60 cable.
I don't mind doing it as I love the car just mad at myself for breaking it.
Good luck and feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions as I am doing it as I said at this very moment.
