I've never used anything but detail spray. When you use detail spray only you don't have to worry about water spots, and you are cleaning the car at the same time as you are claying it.

After the clay bar, the paint is ready for whatever you are going to finish it with. I will also fine compound mine after the clay a couple times a year.
