I'm not in my car now, but if I remember correctly - Hit the lit up AC button on the lower left and the AC will turn off. You should just be able to adjust the temp with the left hand dial (driver's control).
After you set it to the temp you want, hit the set button and that should be it. Somehow you had the AC set to go on.
Do you have the owner's manual?

It's working correctly. Don't mess with it. If you have an owner's manual, I think it explains it in there.

Just turn off the auto function and put the vents on upper and lower. Took me awhile to figure that out when I first got my 04.

I dont use Auto temp in the winter, I set the temp, and use the mode switch to blow it up on the W/S, vents, lower - wherever I need it. Otherwise I find that it is blowing cold air at me occassionally.

If you have it on defrost the A/C comes on unless it's below a certain temp outside (don't have manual with me so don't remember). I agree with others - don't use the auto temp.

AC comes on automatically when you have the front defroster on. You can't shut it off. It doesn't affect how warm the air is, but I find it annoying because it changes the idle speed and turns on the compressor.

Also something to note is that if you have memory seats, when you save a seat position, it also saves your HVAC settings with it. So if you get in the car and press "1" on the memory seats to put your seat where you like it, it will reset your HVAC to whatever it was when you saved it. I find it quite annoying.

Mine does the same thing. I think the AC comes on to dry the air regardless of the outside temperature. I too find it annoying.
