My car is in the shop for a clutch and I just got a call saying I need new motor mounts.
Car background: 67K, m6, owned for 1.5 yrs and I drove 3K miles.
I don't know what bad motor mounts feel/sound like but I've run this car up to 4100 and didn't notice anything.
Anyway, if they are rubber they are probably deteriorated due to age. Wouldn't hurt to do them while things are apart, along with some of the torque tube wear items.
I don't disagre with Black 02 but I would have a couple of concerns. How would they know a, or both, mount(s) are bad - did they pull off the insulation and look? You have to tilt the tt and motor back/down to get them off and swap the clutch so is it possible they over-tilted the motor and did some damage (also, the firewall would be damaged if that happened)? I recently changed my motor mounts to the Hinson Polyurethanes and my 13-year-old mounts (granted - minimal miles on mine) looked brand new still and I have definitely gone to at least 6500 rpm several times. I would ask the shop what they are basing the recommendation on.
I agree, Patches. More info is definitely needed. There are also warnings about tilting the motor too far around the torque tube area that state damage can and will occur if done improperly.
It could also be the shop trying to make a few extra bucks while your car is apart and they have you over the fire.
I replaced mine with the hinson shorter mounts. I did mine just because of age. They could have leaked at some time and I did not notice but I figured they had done their job and time for some new ones.
The tech said next of the mounts was leaking.
Since I'm new to the car I can't really contest that but I will probably not go back for any other work.
I asked one local guy his opinion of this shop but haven't heard from him yet. He's in the oil business which is not far from Vegas in my opinion right now.

THanks for the replies.
Umm...maybe I missed something....
You're having some work done on the car, and while doing so, the shop notified you that they found some other parts that need to be replaced.
Now, if they DIDN'T notify you, and you discovered LATER that the parts needed to be replaced, you'd probably be upset about?!
And you're saying "..I will probably not go back for other work."
Why not go take a look for yourself, then make a decision? I mean, C'MON! Give the shop the benefit of the doubt! Are you REALLY taking the position that "since they're telling me that something ELSE is wrong with my XX year old car, they MUST be crooks?!!
KJ, the general thought here seems to be that the mounts are fine and the shop is putting one over on me.
I don't know and will probably never know but I take a lot of leaps of faith so I did one today and told them to fix it. I also asked them to check the fluids and if they didn't look fresh please replace. I had paid to have this done by another shop and from my experience doing the "ranger method" I know for a fact that they didn't flush the clutch fluid.
Just ask for the old parts back when they are done so you can see the mounts. Not every shop is dishonest. They could be helping you out or saving you on additional labor down the line since the car is already in the air.
I asked about cam and heads and my builder slowed my roll, saying we are at the other end of he car, I won't be saving any money on installation.
I started this by asking if I should have noticed the problem. I asked the shop to notify me of any other issues but I will try to swing by this morning.
I went with stock MMs and he said it should be about $250-270, depending on what the stealer charges them.

The clutch requires the exhaust, rear end components and torque tube to be dropped. I can't think of any labor savings by doing a cam and heads while doing the clutch other than some of the exhaust would already be disconnected.
As far as the mounts, hopefully they have a wholesale account with the dealer to get you decent pricing on them.
I returned Stephen's email this afternoon outlining my truck project. I got a bounce back saying hey would be back to business on Monday after the PRI show.
They seem to be a pretty withit group.
OH1Z06, you are going to pick me up down there after I drop off my truck, right?
