Default TPMS and New Wheels...

I did do a search. Too much to sort through. Question: Can the TPMS sensors be swapped to new wheels or do you always have to buy new ones. Getting ready for new wheels and wondering about that.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, they can be swapped, but if they are getting old (they have batteries in them), it's a good time to put new ones in.

I am not here trying to tell you what to do. This is my experience with the tpms. My car is now 17 years old, I have had three different sets of wheels. the last set was put on at the age of 12 years. As of today those 17 year sensors are still operating. I have purchased a package that includes fobs, tpms and receiver. It is an upgrade from 98 to 01 and up, because the fobs are no longer available, that i still have in the box. I don't think that it will break the bank if you change sensors later down the road. I know of occasions when they were changed out for aftermarket ones that were dead in a year. So be careful what you replace then with when you do.

Interesting. I have a 98 as well. My search told me these are OEM and are what I was planning on getting.

I have a couple question for you. How long have you owned your car? Do you know if they are original?

I've only owned it about 4 months. The wheels are not stock. I don't know if they were ever replaced or not.

It is you decision, I don't like to throw anything away that is still working. Like I said before I don't think it will break the bank if you need to change any down the road.

Be careful of aftermarket, I don't care what they promise. You may be better off keeping what you have.

Wow, after 17 years, all four sensors are still transmitting? Must be some kind of world record. Better call Guinness!

Most TPMS that Ive seen last between 8 and 12 years... many loose one prior to ten... If you are ok knowing that at some point you will have to pay to have new ones replaced could cost you 100/150 ( mount and rebalance ) plus new sensors or break them down and replace without rebalance for 50 or 60 plus sensors, you are going to have to do it before the tires wear out.. its an expense you are going to have to incur when you replace the tires so why not save the 150 in down the road expense and time lost and have peace of mind that its done. and should last ten years.

Maybe I should call Guinness or maybe i am not a worry wort that can't sleep because of something that might go wrong and do things that are not needed. I own every mile that is on this car and I don't know why the sensors are still working but they are. I bought the kit to up grade every thing to 01 and up over 4 years ago and when they stop working i will change them. I was quoted a price of 30 dollars a wheel to change them out and balance. Again I don't think that this is something that will break the bank to change when the time comes.

I hope you do not think anyone is questioning your word Frank..
the point some of us are making is that he has to put new tires on the car Now anyway.. he has to pay Now to have them mounted and balanced... so why not put in new sensors now while he is paying to have it done anyway and insuring at least ten more years without worry over TPMS.
Of course one could go bad tomorrow and you could loose one of yours tomorrow.,.. I too would wait to have one go before I would install new ones. who knows you might get another year or two out of them... but if you needed New tires tomorrow and didn't have the new sensors already in hand. what would you do?

ET, I understand your point, and have no problem with other peoples point of view. We all have different opinions. I stated before when i changed the wheels for the second time, the sensors were already 12 years old. I never gave it a thought to change them as long as they were working. Maybe I should have but I did not. And don't worry I won't call you Dude!!!
