Just bought a 2002 Yellow ZO6 w/ 7,000 miles. Got the oil changed yesterday evening at the local Chevy dealer (service dept. open until midnight!!!) and got the thumbs up regarding the vehicle's condition.
But I think I hear a suspicious noise in traffic. It sounds like "tick-a-tick-a-tick-a-tick-a-tick..." Almost like the "wheel of fortune" in Vegas. Is this normal? Can anyone identify this sound? Do I have trouble?
I turned the AC off. Didn't change the sound. Pushed clutch in, rev-ed the motor I can still hear it...
Thanks in advance. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I test drove a 02 and heard the noise you are talking about. The 02 was brand new 5 miles on it. I spoke with the service manager and he said it was normal for the car. I bought a 03 and have not heard the noise yet, but from what I have read seems to be a common problem with the H pipe in the exhaust. Looks like nothing to worry about other then the having to listen to the noise. :D
When you pushed in the clutch and revved the engine up did it get louder or stay the same? If it stayed the same, then it might have been what I use to hear on my 01. If my memory serves me correctly it had something to do with the ABS unit and I think the dealer said that it was normal. Unusual as it might seem, it doesn't do it any more. On the other hand, if it got louder, as you revved the engine up, then it probably has to be something in the engine. Loose rocker... Stuck lifter... Or something else... Hard to say. Need a little more info.
I have always been able to hear (what I believe to be) the fuel injectors making a clicking sound at low rpms on my car, perfectly normal as far as I know.
I think your car is fine. Every modern engine from Chevrolet (LT1/LS1/LS6) I have ever heard makes some kinda weird noise you wouldn't expect from a modern engine. My 2002 Z06 makes that lifter/injector/electronic distributor noise all the time. I don't like the sound of the engine with the hood up, but haulin' tail done the road is a different story. :D
Matt, glad I'm not alone....the tick, tick, tick drives me nuts frankly, seems more noticeable when the engine is hot, or hotter....I've been told, as it's been suggested here, is it's the fuel injectors...If that's the case, they're too damn noisy...did not hear the same noise on my previous y2k frc.
You might just be hearing valve clatter. I hear it from 1800 to 2200 rpm under load. The 02 Z06 has the highest lift most agressive factory cam GM has ever put in a small block. This is one of the reasons for the special hollow valves and extra strong valve springs that make the clatter (these measures were also needed to allow for the 6500 vs 6000 rpm redline in the LS6).
That sounds like it may be the same noise I hear. I only hear it at low speed. Tomorrow I'll pull out my shotgun mic and record the sound and try to post it here. That way we can all confirm we are hearing the same thing. My fear is the dealer doesn't see enough of these cars to identify the problem or lack thereof. Thanks for the help.

Same here .. roughtly the same rpm range, under light load. Sounds a little like solid lifters, but not as loud. Not really noticeable at other rpms or conditions. Just ignore it. Learn to like it.
